Custom black border - hide image edge problems?
on Jun 14, 2014 at 5:21:59 pm

Hello -
Editing ProRes422 that has defects at the edges of the images. The HD was captured from Hi8 SD and it has:

•thin black borders on the left and right frame edges
•no black border on the top of frame
•a thin strip on the bottom that may be from the top of the video
frame - maybe a timing issue in the analog video?

I've added a still frame that shows these issues.

I'd like to add a thin black border to the top and the bottom of the frame in FCP to cover the problem and match the existing borders on the left and right. I'm sure there's a way to do this in FCP 10.1 but I can't find it.
Suggestions? Thanks in advance!

I have seen that on digitized VCR video as well. Why not enlarge the clip just enough to push the noise at the top and bottom out of the frame?

Thank you Claude -

Your suggestion is a good one - it will solve the problem!

But I'm assuming that enlarging the clips will reduce the quality of the image (very slightly) and the video is weak enough as it is because of it's source.
Also - and this isn't a technical issue - I kind of like a black border. My photography roots showing here maybe.

So further suggestions as to how to create custom black frame edges are still welcome.

Dave

Use the crop function on one clip. Copy and paste attributes to all other clips.

Only drawback to the crop cut/paste attributes approach is if you happen to reposition or scale even slightly one clip you'll notice the border shifting as well on that edit.

Instead I would recommend creating a custom matte. It's better if you have Motion, otherwise start with the Shape generator in FCPX. Turn off fill and adjust the size of the outline and then the x-y scale in the Video tab and you should be able to get the right shape. That will then go as a connected clip over the entire edit and you can still make crop and scale adjustments to the clips underneath.

Why not just add the SIMPLE BORDER effect from the effects panel and adjust the width to match the width of the existing blanking and the color to black?

When I can I'll give these suggestions a try.

You're all awesome.

Just click the overscan button on the monitor.

No, I'm kidding.

What's final final destination of this video?

Jeremy -
What does the overscan button look like?

Just kidding back at ya.

Your question about destination is a good one. But I don't have a good answer. It will probably start as an HD Vimeo post, but may be downloaded from there or a file host for use on any of the bewildering array of contemporary viewing options. So I figure I should get it right just in case.

I'd wait to see where it might end up before doing any scaling.

For review purposes, you can always crop a few pixels, or even add a border in that process.

Are you adding this to an already HD timeline?

If so, are you going to letter box or fill the screen?

The 'simple border' is really simple and would do the trick. I just tried it and there was no learning curve as long as you have used any effect before. It also helps the image pop a bit more. Some color correction might help as well.

Select all clips and make a compound clip.

Scale the compound clip up and call it projectname_EDIT_CMPD .

Rename project ProjectName_Scaled

Your not going to loose hardly anything looking at the Hi8 quality already.

If you need to change edit go into the compound clip and just change the edit.
