Can\'t view more than 2 angles in multicam viewer in FCP X
on Jun 11, 2014 at 4:01:18 am

I've just finished syncing up 7 cameras plus dual-system audio in a FCPX project. I'm ready to start editing and have hit a strange problem.

When I try to switch from "2 angles" to "9 angles" or "4 angles" etc. in the settings dropdown menu within the viewer, nothing happens. It's stuck showing the default 2 angles and I can't figure out how to switch to the 9-angle view. I've tried resizing the viewer so it's taking up practically the entire screen but still nothing.

I feel like the answer is obvious but I've searched high and low in the forums and can't find anything. I've never had this issue before but I'm using an older macbook and fcpx version than I usually use: 2.4 ghz i5 macbook w/4gb of ram, FCPX 10.0.8.

I realize my system may not be fast enough to cut a 7-cam multiclip in real time but I'm hoping to get by with proxies. If not, I'll just prep the project and move it to a faster system.

I'm not sure if I'm doing something wrong, if it's a glitch or if it's related to my lack of system resources. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

When you open it up in the Angle Editor I assume all your angles are sitting there nicely synced up?

Yes--everything is synced up in the angle editor. I can shuffle through the angles two at a time in the viewer. I just can't switch to the 9 angle view to see everything at once.

Sounds to me like one of those odd glitchy hang ups.
Trash prefs and reboot and if your system is under powered, transcode to proxy so you're working with the smallest data streams practical.
Sometimes, it's just a matter of "stuff happens."

Can you show a screengrab of the issue?

This is the screen it's stuck on. When I click "9 angles" it stays in the 2 angle view. As you can see from the seven boxes in the bottom of the viewer window, there are 7 angles.

Thanks, Rob.

Have you tried trashing your prefs and layouts as Bill suggested?

What size is that screen? 4% seems pretty small!

Yep-tried trashing prefs but no change.

The Canvas is what's set to 4%, not the viewer. I just made the viewer as large as possible for the screenshot to show that it wasn't an issue of screen space, which made the canvas very small. The angle view is resized automatically by scaling the window. This is a 15" MacBook Pro and I've never read anything saying only 2 angles will fit on a MacBook screen. Could that be it? I'm sure I've done multicam edits on a MacBook before with no problems.

What does the angle editor look like?

What happens of you open the Event viewer, view angles and scrub the multiclip.

When I click "9 angle" or "4 angles" or "16 angle" absolutely nothing happens. It's as if it were greyed out (though it isn't).

When I try to go to 9-angle view in the event viewer its the same deal, no change:

Thanks for everyone's help. This is a real mystery.

And yes, I have tried trashing prefs several times. i.e. deleting these two files plus a third one that hasn't been re-created by FCP yet:

Gotcha. What do you see when you actually switch to 9? Do the icons at the bottom change?

yeah weird. 2 angles selected. Will it not let you select 9 so that that option is checked?

Hi Rob,

Are you happy / willing to share your library without the original or proxy media to see if it behaves the same way on my or anybody else's system. I'm sure the 'missing file' clip won't be a problem.

Matt

Thanks Matt! I would love for you to test it on your system if you'd be willing. Can I send it via email?

Update: I re-installed FCPX and updated to 10.0.9 and the problem persists! I'm surprised I haven't heard from anyone else who has had this issue. I would try updating to 10.1 but that would require upgrading to Mavericks and I'm not ready to do that quite yet.

Rob,

More than willing although I am running 10.1.1 on Mavericks

Even though we are not the same version it would be good to see. Maybe someone else who is running the same as you will also offer.

How do we exchange email addresses without making them public on here?

Matt

Rob,

I am more ignorant than I thought. How do I open an EVENT in FCP X or add it to an existing library?

I have never encountered this before.

Edit..I just remembered you are on FCP X 10.0.8 and therefore you are not using the new library structure where the events and projects are in a library package.

Rob,

Do you have the ability to select the event in and then choose FILE > Export Event XM?. I will be able to import that XML

I can't remember if that was in 10.0.8

Hey, Rob. Thanks for posting the Event, and thanks, Matt, for suggesting it.

I was able to update it to 10.1 and the angles show up perfectly.

Here's a pic:

I think that this problem is localized to you machine. I would make a new user and see if the problem persists. When you updated to Mavericks, was it a clean install?

There's good info on how to do that here:

Jeremy,

How did you update the event? FCP here won't allow me.

It's a bit of a trick.

If you have the Event on an external drive, make a folder called "Final Cut Events" on root level of the external drive.

If using your boot drive, put the "Final Cut Events" folder in your user > movies folder.

If you already have a final cut events folder in any of those locations, temporarily move any other folders out of it to prevent unnecessary updating to libraries.

Inside the final cut events folder make a new folder and name it whatever. I named it RobDavis.

In the 'RobDavis' folder, put the unzipped downloaded Event and rename it to "CurrentVersion.fcpevent".

In fcp, choose File > Update Projects and Events.

And then choose the external drive under "locate" or choose update all if the event is on your boot drive.

The Event should update.

Thanks for that. I had done everything except make the sub folder under the Final Cut Events folder. How quickly one forgets the way it used to work.

Bingo! I opened the project under a differnt user account and it opened right up in 4-angle mode. I never would have thought to try that. Thanks so much to everyone!

I was just about to update to Mavericks but I'm currently putting the finishing touches on a feature documtary in FCP7 and I don't want to risk having to deal with problems after updating. I don't know what I'd do without the cow!
