Total FCPX Crash - X does not recognize any plug ins anymore
on Apr 28, 2014 at 1:39:21 pm

Hallo,

I really really hope, somebody can help me out.
I have a deadline in 8 hours and following happened. I still work with 10.0.8 since I have OSX 10.8.4. since I work on a Hacintosh.
FCPX always worked fine. When I just dropped a Compressor on an Audio Track it crashed. Then on restart it gets always stuck, since it tries to open all TL, which all contain effects and third party plug ins.
When I hide all Events and Projects, it opens fine, but I see, that it does not recognize ANY of my third party plug ins, effects or generators.
It shows suddenly in the effect bin three effects only: Drop Shadow, Luma Keyer and Keyer. That's it. Probably even less, than the standard package.
What can this be? I am really desperate, since I never saw this before.
I already tried everything from Trashing Preference Files, Disk Utility, re installing X - nothing.
Back Up from TimeMAchine is an option?
Thanx for help.

Go to your Movies/Motion Templates. Temporarily move everything out of there. Trash preferences, hopefully FCP X opens up OK.

Close FCP X, start moving motion templates/generators one by one (or as many as you want to experiment with).

Also, I've had weird issues that have been fixed by deleting a specific file (this is for 10.1 but might work for previous versions):

But since this thread deals with libraries in FCPX, I assume the fix won't apply to the previous version, where still Project and Events are at hand.

These are shots in the dark, thank you for your patience. To find out if preferences are corrupt, you can make a new user account on your computer and see how fcp x opens up on that account.

That's the weird thing: I did and it worked perfectly, apart form the fact that all plug ins are suddenly in Demo Mode. So I know it's not X itself, but rather some corrupted file. I took already all my Library back from TM from days ago, but it also did not solve the problem. Thank YOU for your good will to trying to help. I really need X working again in this account, but I am pretty much at the end of the bar....tried about everything possible.
For what it's good: The first crash and all the situation started when dropping a LOGIC Compressor and Limiter on a Sound Clip.

Yes, I got a trial version from the manager of Digitalrebellion - Jon.
Unfortunately after doing the full Housekeeper, now even the thumbnails (see my previous post attachment) are gone.
I think I tried all of Digital Rebellions Sub Programs in that package.
You recommended on a specific part?

I was only thinking about their freeware application "Preference Manager" (that does also appear in their more extensive application suites).

Here are some files you can try deleting manually (they might only be on Mavericks/ FCPX 10.1.1):
~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.FinalCut.plist
~/Library/Application Support/Compressor/CompressorConfig.plist
~/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro/Layouts/Final Cut Pro.saved.moduleLayout
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.FinalCut/.dat0e10.000
~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.FinalCut.savedState/data.data
~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.FinalCut.savedState/restorecount.plist
~/Library/Saved Application State/com.apple.FinalCut.savedState/windows.plist

Of course emptying trash and restarting the computer might help after deleting and before reopening FCP X.

I hate to even suggest it, but...

I downloaded Apple's Xcode in order to get their app "Instruments". It allows you to see every file that FCP X reads or writes. Maybe you'll find the file that's the cause of it all...

I will try.
I figured out at this state it's so bad, that when I open FCPX it even creates only one Preference Plist instead of 2.

FCPX needs to be closed.

1.

2.

3. Hit record. Let FCPX launch, then stop instruments. Start looking at the logs.

Sort by file path. In theory, if it is user specific, the problematic file(s) will be somewhere within your user folder.

Try deleting this folder (and emptying trash, etc.):
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.FinalCut/

Save the Instruments generated log and upload it here. I'll convert to a spreadsheet to look into it further.

I had a similar situation where oddities and anomalies cropped up while using FCP X. The symptoms were different than what you are experiencing (my issues were things like the skimmer not working, open libraries would be closed and closed libraries would be open on close/relaunch, transform and crop areas in inspector were blank, etc.) I had two separate systems exhibit this same odd behavior but was working on separate drives and libraries. Repairing permissions, trashing preferences had no effect.

Like you, though, the same problematic libraries and FCPX in general, worked fine under a new user. However, like you, I didn't want to have to go through the tedious process of replicating the User that had been working. What did work for me was to rebuild my user account. This retains your settings, etc. but clears the user files that are stored in /var/db/dslocal/.

I followed the procedure found here:
http://www.cnet.com/how-to/how-to-rebuild-a-user-account-in-os-x/

After doing that on both systems I am back up and running as I was prior to things going sideways in FCP X. No idea if this will solve your issues but I thought I'd throw it out there.

Jon

/var/db huh? Wasn't aware of that user-specific folder. If that's the case, maybe the culprits could be found in these 2 folders (any file with the name FinalCut)
/var/db/BootCaches/C846C685-FEE2-4996-B4DE-357A7B53234E
/private/var/db/BootCaches/C846C685-FEE2-4996-B4DE-357A7B53234E/

(of course back these up before deleting, etc.)

Jerome,

I didn't look into it much further. I had two systems that weren't working properly so I carbon copied my HD on one machine and gave it a shot. It worked so I proceeded to use the same method on the other system. If you read the link that I posted in the earlier thread the author explains what is housed in that directory:

The reason for this is the directory structure that defines the account and its capabilities is stored within the hidden /var/db/dslocal/ directory, unlike other system and user settings that are within preferences folders either in the global or user library folders.

Once it worked I just went back to editing…

I can't say one way or the other. The two systems I was working with were a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. I haven't built a hackintosh so I don't know what would be different.

I did run Carbon Copy Cloner before doing the procedure the first time so I had a fall back plan.

If a new user is working, it might be easiest to migrate to that new user and save yourself the time of trying to fix the corrupted one.

Just curious, but was this a fresh OS install?

No, I am running this system on my Hackintosh since half year, mostly totally fine.
If I migrate to new account, is this painless? How would I do that? Will I have to reinstall all my plug ins and everything again or not?
What about the option to start the system from external boot partition and recover from TM?

Thanx.

[Sascha Engel] "If I migrate to new account, is this painless? How would I do that? Will I have to reinstall all my plug ins and everything again or not?"

It's not exactly painless. There might be some reinitiating of serial numbers and such. I don't know exactly what you have on your machine, do it's hard to tell you exactly what will happen.

This has some good guidelines: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4053?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

Troubleshooting an issue like this can be bring about a huge time waste. If a new user is working, I would start to try and migrate everything towards that user and leave the old user behind.

The other option is a complete reinstall, which also takes time, but is very thorough.

I don't have any Hackintosh experience, so I don't know what that entails. These days with the AppStore and other cloud services, a reinstall is not as painful as it used to be.

Re: Total FCPX Crash - X does not recognize any plug ins anymore
on May 1, 2014 at 9:42:17 am

Sascha,

There might be more com.apple.FinalCut.plist files. Here an example:

com.apple.FinalCut.plist.1imNFpc
com.apple.FinalCut.plist.7QAaP3r
com.apple.FinalCut.plist.bvqlrcc
com.apple.FinalCut.plist.hrZz0Yi
com.apple.FinalCut.plist.K9kb6pB
com.apple.FinalCut.plist.pUIixS5
com.apple.FinalCut.plist.Rek3Pyq
com.apple.FinalCut.plist.YyE7jU5
com.apple.FinalCut.plist
com.apple.FinalCut.LSSharedFileList.plist

All those with the cryptic extension after the .plist are saved from a crash as backup.
So even if you deleted the current com.apple.FinalCut.plist FCPX will search for the last saved prefs file and use it – and this pref file might be bad.
Remove all of them.

Next step is to look where you 3rd party plugins are installed.
It might be in the user folder (which I always think is a bad idea) or it might be in "/Library/Application Support/Final Cut Pro". Check the latter one for read/write permissions.

Dear Jerome, Jon, Jeremy (wow, how many Js!) and Andreas (da kann ich auch Deutsch sprechen mit Dir ;-),

Thanx for all your inout and serious attempts to help. It was really touching and the only things that made me feel good in all this.
I tried EVERY possible thing (including what Andreas suggested in the last post), but nothing worked.
It's a nasty bug in X - the HIV of Mac I'd say.
In the end I booted from USB stick and restored my entire drive from TM.
All seems to work ok so far and FCPX is up and running.

I still would like to know one day, what this crazy thing might have been.

All the Best guys and Muchos Gracias again!
