FCPX + LUT Utility = serious kernel task problem!
on Mar 17, 2014 at 9:08:08 am

Hi there
I'm currently editing a music-video in FCPX 10.1.1 as i've done a thousand times before. I'm editing FS700 files, rewrapped to h264, over Thunderbolt on a Macbook Pro 2.2 i7, 10GB ram.

This time I've installed this LUT Utility and have applied 3D LUT's to my clips. It occurs that this combination has a serious bug! The editing is extremely slow, and i get the spinning beacball every single time at try to make any adjustments. In the Acitivity Monitor it looks like some "kernel_task" is taking up all my memory. Furthermore, i've noticed that my hard drive is slowly filled until it's full and then i have to reboot - then every thing is back to normal.

To sum up: FCPX + LUT Utility = "kernel_task" bug that fills my harddrive, and taking up all my memory.

Has anybody experienced this? Or does anybody have a fix?

Every help would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

// Thomas

Are you referring to the LUT Utility from Color Grading Central? If so, which LUT and where did it come from? I use it and it's been rock solid on a 2009 MP with FW or SATA drives. I suggest converting some test footage to ProRes and see whether you have better luck. H.264 is not an edit-friendly format and may be the cause of this issue.

I have and use LUT Utility and haven't noticed this.

Performance has been pretty good, even on 4k material and an aging MacPro, performance is better than any other LUT filter I have used.

Kernel task usually means that there's some disk reading and writing going on. Do you have "Make Proxies" checked? Are you auto (background) rendering?

Render and Proxy files reside in the Library, so depending on where your Library is, your disk may be getting full.

Of course, using something like LUT Utility will cause a lot of rendering.

All events at projects are stored on my external thunderbolt hard drive. All render files etc at written to that hard drive as well.

It probably could be a problem with the h264 codec - is there any way, that i can make Final Cut conform the only used clips to ProRes now? I'm thinking of the "optimized media" option you'll get when importing footage.

I don't think i can make it to the deadline if i have to manually conform all the footage again and relink all the files.

Hmm.

What version of FCPX/OS are you using?

And this is your boot drive that is filling up or your thunderbolt drive?

Is this a clean or upgraded install of Mavericks?

When this is happening, what is going under the "disk" or "network" tab of activity monitor?

Do you have any automatic analysis happening in the background? How about background rendering?

Have you turned any of those off?

- It's my boot drive it is filling up.

- I've updated to Maverick from Moutains Lion.

- I've untapped background rendering/analysis in the preferences pane.

I havent checked the disk / network activity monitor yet - i will try this.

Do you have any idea what is filling up your drive? What are the files and where are they located? When you restart, the drive is then emptied again?

I don't think this is necessarily a problem with LUT Utility.

I would first make a new admin user in the OS, and run FCPX from there to see if this problem persists. If it does, you might want to think about either reinstalling Mavericks from the ground up, or moving your pertinent data from your old user to the new user and delete the old user.

This document talks about setting up a new user for troubleshooting purposes: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4053?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

You'll want to check which version of LUT Utility you're running by going to System Preferences and clicking LUT Utility pref at the bottom.

Version 1.43 is the most current version and has been optimized to work with FCP X 10.1 and later and also contains some important bug fixes including a memory leak issue.

To update to the latest version, simply go to:

http://www.colorgradingcentral.com/lututility

Download the "trial" version and run the "Apply LUT FxPlug" Installer ONLY.

As a precaution if you have OSIRIS and other LUTs installed be sure to back them up to a temporary location i.e. desktop before running the install.

LUTs for LUT Utility are stored at:

user/Movies/Motion Templates/Effects/CGC/LUTUtility

If you experience any other support issues please email me directly at:
