With 10.1, the new Motion Title handling and the new XML version now it's possible to render out timed single frame subtitles.

Here a little app (beta) which allows to create rendered subtitles.
Its early state – so there are no additional format rather then FCPX. Others will follow. Meanwhile if you have Xto7 you can transport those subtitles to 7 and create an EDL which can be used with other apps.

There is no manual but a quick start description.

I took an existing project and de-selected all roles except for Titles and exported that XML. Used your tool and set the Target Directory and gave it a name. Got the XML files about 'single' and 'frame'. Opened the frame one in X. Got a single frame. Exported as PNG sequence. Got a folder with a single PNG in it. Opened the frame XML in X and got 34 unconnected clips. None of which were found in that folder created by your tool. Please let me know where I'm going wrong. Thank you.

Hi Ron,

I'm not sure what you did wrong.
Anyway selecting/deselecting roles does not have any influence when exporting XML.
Currently the app probably only works with projects which have subtitles only.
So you can try to copy all subtitles and paste them into a new project and export that one as XML.

You can also send me the XML and I'll have a look (kiel at spherico dot com)

Thank you.

I wasn't clear about the purpose of the program but that didn't stop me from experimenting with it! :)

But, I do a lot of subtitling at work. I take an HD clip and put it into an SD timeline and move the clip to the top of the frame. This leaves me a black area underneath where I can add three lines of subtitle text. This text, of course, is static.

I've not found a good workflow in Final Cut Pro X for this. Subtitling is the only thing I still use the legacy Final Cut Pro 7 for. in 7, if the subtitle is in English, I can put the entire script in one text object and simply bubble the next three lines to the top and lay into the timeline. Careful that I'm not making the timeline clip active but only sourcing from the version that's not linked to the clips in the timeline, I can then fly with laying in, play until those three lines are spoken, then bubble the next three lines to the top and lay in. If the subtitle language is not English, then I lay in from an XCEL spreadsheet cell with a copy past for each three-line section.

Can your app enable me to do this as fast in X?

Thank you.

Hi Don,

The app can't do that.

But here some ideas.

1)
a) First in X create a new project. Put a 3 or more second subtitle - that one you will work with later - into it, add a role then duplicate till you reach the max amount of subtitles you expect. Export as XML. Keep this XML for later use.
b) Then use my X-Title export and import the XML. So you will have xy dummy subtitles. Export the XML from there as STL text. Keep the exported file as well for later use.
c) In Excel create a 3 column layout: TC in, TC out, Text dummy. Import the STL into Excel. You should keep this document as well cause its the base for all of your later projects.
d) Now open the "real" text Excel doc and copy the text column. Replace the text column in the dummy with the real text. Replace all line breaks in the text with "|" (pipe character).
e) Copy the rows you need and paste into a new text document. Save it and you will have again a text STL though with dummy TCs.
f) Take my X-Title Importer and create a secondary storyline for X with these subtitles.
g) Open the exported XML in X and add the storyline to the project you are working on.
h) Now you can drag and trim the subtitles.

2)
a) Put your favorite subtitle in the timeline were you need them with correct in and out - don't change the text.
b) Export the project as XML.
c) Convert to STL with X-Title Export.
d) Import this file into Excel.
e) like 1 d-h

And a Happy New Year

Wow. That's an impressive workflow! I very much appreciate that you put so much thought in to that. Thank you and I'll work on your suggestions in a few days and let you know.

Thank you.

I have uploaded a new beta version which supports EDL.
Now with the rendered titles from FCP 10.1 you can go to Smoke, Avid, PPro and FCP or other NLEs which support EDL.

Be aware that EDL only supports 999 entries.
