About 3 months ago we switched over from using San Locations to Sparse Bundles. The idea was that it would be faster and easier to give copies of projects from editors to producer to assistants etc. The process of duplicating projects and events into a new san location via the interface is often time consuming. Also, we theorized it would help situations where something was used out of or imported into the wrong san location since projects not in use would be unmounted and therefore hidden.

Our strategy when backing up/archiving FCPX projects was to limit the data that was being "backed up" (copied or moved) to the folders not labeled "Render Files/High Quality Media". Since we do not copy media into the Event folder and just link to a central location on the san, this would keep what is backed up and archived to a more manageable batch.

With sparse bundles, it seem as though we have to back up the whole thing unless we go in to a project that is ready to be archived and manually mount and then delete the renders.

Does anyone have a better way to do this?

Hey Keith, funny, we just installed this yesterday.

To reduce SD's size, run this tool first and then go back into Andreas Kiel's Create Disk image app and then run 'Shrink Disk Image' which is at the bottom of your app. We run our media out of a central location and not the event, so we were able to get about a 80-90% reduction in project/event size.

Thanks John. Nice app that guy has made. Do you have one person use x-wiper and clean up after all the editors, or do you make everyone clean up after themselves?

We didn't do any cleanup for the last years worth of sparse disks until yesterday. I generally feel like the machine of our business works better if one person masters a skill and then gets the others up to speed on how to do the same thing. So for now the main editor is cleaning stuff up, but eventually he'll get the PA's and everyone else involved. Just over the course of a few projects yesterday he cleaned up a TB of space on the server.
