Audio narration recorded with level too high; how to reduce voice distortion?
on Nov 25, 2013 at 10:26:11 pm

I recorded an hourlong interview between one host and one guest, with the levels set too "hot" on both lav mics. As a result, in the recorded video their voices are distorted. The amount of distortion varies as the talent turned their heads toward, or away from, their lab mics.

If possible, in FCPX I would like to eliminate -- or at least reduce -- this distortion. FCPX has many audio effects, and I'm not sure which one (or which combination of them), and what parameter value setting(s), might give the best results.

Your recommendations, please?

Thanks!

iZotope RX3 MAY help you out - it can cleverly redraw the waveform to get rid of the distortion but it really depends how hot you recorded it.

If iZotope can't do it then you're probably out of options.

AFAIK, there are no audio effects that will help you in FCPX. iZotope RX3 has an excellent de-clipping capability. However, there is a point beyond which little can be done. I'm not up to date on Soundtrack Pro, but it may have the capability. If you have FCS3, it's in there. Also, if you have Logic, it might be there, too.

Adobe audition also has a declipper but not nearly as effective as Izotope's. The Izotope declipper saved audio for me when I thought the only option would be a re-shoot so I'd definitely give that a try.
