Strange Render Selection behavior
on Oct 23, 2013 at 8:40:48 pm

I'm trying to render a selection on my timeline -- I have a long timeline with different sections of things, but want to be able to play a certain section of it without little hiccups at every cut, (and no I don't want to put this little section in it's own project just to watch it) and every time I try to do a render selection, it will render a bit of it, and then just stop and the render percentage will go to 100%. I will hit ctrl-R for Render Selection again, and it will render a little sliver of it and stop. I have to do this a bunch of times just to get a section of something rendered down. I have a 5 minute section that I'm trying to render and it took hitting render selection something like 30 times to get it all rendered.

This is very annoying as you can imagine because the idea would be to hit render, and be able to actually walk away while it does it's job.

Any ideas?

Maybe a pre-existing corrupt render file? I'd try getting FCPX to delete all render files and try again.

This is a brand new "project" (sequence) with everything copy/pasted into it.

I've had it exhibit this behavior in all kinds of different "projects". It seems that regardless of my selection, it will just render one clip and then stop. Forcing me to hit Ctrl-R for every clip. Kinda ridiculous.

You might try trashing your preferences? It's not normal behaviour for FCPX so definitely an issue of some sort with your particular install.

Have you upgraded to OS X Mavericks? If so, see the video Steve linked to in this thread- http://forums.creativecow.net/readpost/344/24421

I haven't upgraded yet, but that's interesting. I was wondering about that behavior as well.

Will try deleting the preferences again, though I did that 2 days ago for another bit of weirdness I was noticing.

Hoping the FCPX update will fix a lot of these finicky little bugs.. Really really loving the program....when it works.

It seems to be a related issue to the App not having focus. If I start a Render Selection and then click away from FCPX the render will stop, and then it will start to exhibit that strange render behavior. I was working on the same section I mentioned earlier, and did a render selection without clicking away from the app, and just letting it render, and it got through it all the way. It seems to be some kind of issue related to the way that FCPX is handing off back and forth the priority of the system resources.
