Editing FCP X Titles affects the clip it is attached to
on Aug 19, 2013 at 8:43:22 am

Hi

I'm quite new to FCP X being an FCP 7 user and use it now to accommodate DSLR footage.

When I add a title or any overlay in FCPX, I can't change any of its parameters without affecting the clip underneath. I want to apply a title to run for a complete 3 minute film and need to adjust its position, however when I do this it moves the master clip to. The same happens when I resize etc.

I can't find any solution on the web at the moment. Can anyone shed any light please?

Thanks.

John,

Control is dictated by selection. You need to select the Title asset in the "timeline." It's parameters will then be live in the Inspector.

Hi Paul

I have been selecting the title in the timeline and resizing for example but it's still affecting the clip it's attached to. I found one other person on an Apple forum with the same problem but no-one seemed to understand his issue.

Thanks.

I remember there have been title templates that made the underlying clip move when you made adjustments to the position of the title in its Video tab. What version of FCPX are you running?

Hi

I updated to the latest version yesterday after this problem arose. In using one of the in built titles.

John,

There are two kind of titles.
One is a kind of "stand alone"
The other one "use clip connected"

You normally can see which kind they are. All these ones which do have this little landscape icon will influence the clip.

To make sure what will happen open a copy of the title in Motion. If there is a drop zone the title and it settings can influence the clip.

If you like that title and want to use it remove the drop zone and save it under new name/group/theme.

Thank you Andreas. I'll try this when I get back to my office next.

Cheers!

Adding to what Andreas said:

If you want to use such a title and you don't have Motion to modify it you can still resize the title in the Text tab of the Inspector or change its vertical position using the Baseline slider.

Thank you for this answer, Andreas. I have been fighting with a title for an hour wondering WHY O WHY everything I did to it transformed anything else it touched.
