Varying opacity within a clip
on Jun 16, 2013 at 9:31:09 pm

Hi all,

I'm fairly new to video editing in general and FCP X specifically and I've been asked by my wife to put together a short video of her friend's wedding.

I've got a background with animating text on, and what I'm trying to achieve is to have two short video clips running at the same time, one in each corner.

I've managed to set this up and feather the edges, but what I want them to do is fade in and out at separate times, however I'm not sure if this is possible by varying the opacity and keyframing.

I've tried setting a keyframe on each video and altering the opacity between them from low to high, but either I'm not doing it right or this way won't work. Whenever I play it back, I end up having the opacity setting at the last setting that I adjusted for the entire clip.

To summarise - the base layer is a pastel backdrop with animated text, and one and two levels above that are video clips that I want to fade in and out.

Is what I'm trying to do possible, and how do I do it?

Thanks,

Pete
