After cut with Blade Tool, incoming clip turns dark grey
on Jun 15, 2013 at 2:23:04 am

I imported an hour-long program from a QuickTime movie recorded on an AJA KiPro (ProRes 422(HQ)). In the event, I marked an In and Out point, and I then added this clip to a new project.

I found a small section that I want to remove from the project timeline. When I clicked the clip (in the timeline) with the Blade tool FCPX not only cut the timeline at that frame, it also turned the clip that follows this cut to dark grey. (The clip preceding the cut remained blue, as it had been.)

This dark grey clip that follows the timeline plays video only (no audio, even though that does show in the timeline clip).

I've never seen this before, and would appreciate your suggestions about the cause. How do I fix this, so that I can proceed to edit the rest of the show?

Thanks,
FastBill

Could you possibly have hit the V key, disabling the clip? Disabled clips are dark grey, but the audio would be disabled too unless it is detached or there is another track besides the clips own audio.

Are you working in an actual project timeline, or in a "compound clips as projects" method timeline? Or maybe in the original clips "open clip in timeline", um, timeline?

Just trying to brainstorm, not quite sure what's going on here.. Maybe post a screenshot?

FWIW I work with Prores from a KiPro in FCPX just about everyday.

I've seen this behavior before. If it's the same thing, the fade handle has been extended for the length of the clip. Expand your clip so you can see both audio and video and take a look at the audio for fade handles or overlaps.

It turned out that I had pressed Option+S, which turned on "Solo selected clips." Thus, when I cut the clip with the Blade tool, the clip prior to the cut remained selected (and therefore it was "Solo'd") and the clip after the cut (which was not selected) was turned darker grey and silenced.

The FCPX Help says that "nonsoloed clips are shown in black and white," which is exactly what I saw. FCPX also "lights up" in yellow the "Solo selected clips" toolbar button at the top right-hand side of the Timeline window, next to the "Snap" button.

Ah, the FCP-X equivelent of the famous Mackie mixers "Rude Solo Light" might be a nice UI add?

A more welcome addition might be Logic's "yellow solo glow." Any soloed regions in Logic have a yellow glow around them.
