Why can't I preview multiclips?
on May 14, 2013 at 1:16:51 am

Is this a computer power issue or it this just a feature of FCPX multicam? From my computer, I cannot skim or play a multiclip from the event browser to select a favorite or make a selection.

I don't have any problem skimming a multiclip in the event browser so I'd guess it's a horsepower issue.

I have a 2011 i7 imac 3.4 with 16gigs of ram. I am working off firewire 800 though. Doesn't seem right with proxy clips that I can't play through a multiclip in the event browser.

Definitely not right then - I'm happily skimming with a 2010 i3 based iMac with 8gb RAM - and I'm using 1080p ProRes 422 not proxies. I'm only looking at two streams of video and an audio track though, how many are you trying to watch at once?

2-4. It's been this way for me since 10.04. Understandable with full hd on FW but doesn't make sense with proxy. It makes for a very frustrating experience. I'm glad to hear this isn't a feature problem. Not sure how I could solve it though seeing as it happens regardless of the hd that I'm using.

Humm. This should work without a problem. The data rate on FCP X proxy from 1080p footage is only 1.6 MB/sec. Your FW drive should be getting between 60-80 MB/sec. You should be doing 8 streams without any trouble at all.

Can you check the read speed on your FW HD? Use BlackMagic Disk Speed Test or the AJA System Test.

Also open up activity monitor, watch the Disk Activity during your attempt at playback, and let me know the read data rate.
