I imported AVCHD footage from a hard drive that had the original file structure. I think FCPX reads it as a card, b/c it automatically copied the files to the FCPX events folder (I typically don't copy to the events folder). The selection to uncheck "Copy to Events" was grayed out. So I didn't even have the option. Any way around that?

You would have to transcode/rewrap before you open FCPX.

You can use ClipWrap for this.

FCPX cannot read the AVCHD files natively, everything must be in .mov format.

FCPX has to rewrap the AVCHD footage in order to play it so it has to make a copy somewhere and that somewhere is always going to be the Events folder.

Otherwise you can use something like ClipWrap to create the rewrapped files outside of FCPX.

What I do is make an event called 'Import' and then import like normal. After that, we copy the media we've transcoded from the 'optimized' media folder and drag it through finder to wherever we keep our referenced media at. It ain't perfect, but it works.

Clipwrap seem the best suggestion but don't forget that it does not get all the meta data from the avchd clip - I believe stuff like camera ID and other stuff is lost at least with my Panny camera.
