video template in FC X?
on Apr 29, 2013 at 10:47:16 pm

Dear all,

I am new in FC X. I want to animate several clips and images that will appear in different times and space on screen, and will play separately(I uploaded two screen shots as example of what I need to do).

is there any template in FC X that I could use for this or I have to create it in after effects and then render the movie for FC X? (in after efefcts I could do keyframe animating and placing the videos in different positions and times).

I have been looking for all the presets in FC X(effects, generators etc) but could not find it anywhere. If these is not in FC X, do you think is a good idea creating a movie in AE that will import in FC X? the problem with this is that i like to edit these movies in FCX (in terms of timming i mean), because is edited with music...

let me know what you all think!
Thank you!
Esther.

Thank you all!

It's simple in X.

You'll need 25 clips that are long enough to run the length of the effect you want.

Put any first clip in the primary storyline.
Attache each subsequent clip as a connected clip. (position your play head on the first frame of the clip on the primary and press Q to connect the new clip to the existing one.)

Repete over and over to attach all 25 clips.

Click on the top one (which is currently visible full screen) and open the Transform tab in the Info window and resize it (try 18%) or to taste.

Now you want to select your sized clip and copy the attributes of that clip and paste them on all your other clips to resize them as a batch.

Then either drag them into position or use the transform numeric location targets to re-position them.

When you get everything the way you like, select the entire stack of clips and make the whole thing a Compound cliip. Then you can place it in any subsequent project and open it and just drop new clips on it to replace the old content with new content.

Pretty much that's it.

The only warning is that if the original clips are uncompressed RED files, this is going to process like a DOG. You might want to create proxys or resize your clips before importing them if you want to work with this much content efficiently.

But that's the basic idea.

You can build an effect in Motion and use image wells as placeholders. In FCPx you just populate the wells with your footage.
You can work with Audio in Motion so can make sure the timing is right.
You can also think of separating static tiles from tiles moving around by creating 2 effects that you than edit back to back in FCPx.

The advantage of using Motion vs After Effects is that you can don't double up on media management because in Motion you don't use your footage but just placeholders. And you can reuse the tiles effect for ever in the future :-)

Happy editing

Carlsten, thank you. Is Motion another software outside ProX? if so, i don't have it..so can't do it this way but thanks anyway for replying.

You might think twice about this recommendation if you were aware of this company's allegedly less than ethical business practices:
