FCP won't recognize Motion?
on Apr 29, 2013 at 4:18:09 am

When I try to right click on a title in FCP and modify it in Motion it keeps telling me that I must have Motion 5 installed, but it is installed. I tried re-installing it and nothing changed. Why won't it recognize motion?

If you have FCS3 also installed, trash all prefs for both sets of apps. Launch the old Motion first to re-establish paths to the old FCP7. Then launch FCP7. If these two open fine, then you should be OK again with FCP X and Motion 5.

I don't know what FCS3 is, so I don't think I have it...

Is Motion installed in the Applications folder or have you moved the application to another folder?

Classic! Has anyone noticed all the FCP X posts over at the FCP forum? They need to rename it FCP versions 1-7 forum or something.

Try trashing prefs for both FCPX and Motion 5. Have you launched Motion 5 yet?

I did launch it, but I'm not sure how to trash the prefs...

The free Preference Manager from Digital Rebellion should help you.

Thanks for the tip. I installed the program and trashed the preferences but I'm still getting the same message. I re-installed Motion too and it didn't seem to help.

Just to see if this works, let's try going the other way, can you create a Motion template in Motion (use a "Final Cut Effect" or "Final Cut Generator") and have it show up in FCPX?

Yeah, FCP will recognize items made in Motion but not the other way way around apparently. They need a therapist to learn to communicate better.

[Ignacio Holiday] "They need a therapist to learn to communicate better."

Certainly some creative counseling otherwise known as criticism.

If you make a new admin user does it work?

I'm not sure what you mean; if I sign in as guest I can't run FCP.

You have to create a whole new account.

Open Sys Prefs, Choose Users and Groups, create a new user with admin privileges.

I'm just trying to modify a FCP title in Motion. It doesn't matter which title or transition I click on, I get the same error message every time.

Not all titles and transitions are editable.
