Problems with HD Multicam Edit
on Jan 23, 2013 at 8:37:35 am

I need to do a 6 cam multi edit in FCPX. What hardware would I need.

I tried it but it plays for 2 seconds then stops for 10 seconds etc etc.

I'm editing on a Macbook Pro 15 inch, 8gig Ram, i7 processor 2GHz.

Can anyone help?

Thanks
Enrico

Did you create proxy media and change the playback preference to use proxy? That will help.

What is the storage that your media is on? Internal drive? Thunderbolt RAID? USB 2.0 External drive? It makes a big difference.

Hi David

Im editing from an external drive via usb 2.

If I change the files to proxy will I still have the full hd quality once it renders? If so how do I do that?

Hi Enrico

USB2 will hardly support a single stream of HD let alone 6. Even using proxy media you are going to struggle it simply is not quick enough to cope.
You need to look at a quicker external hard drive solution. I think your laptop supports Thunderbolt. If so that would be ideal to get the drive speed you need.

Yes you'll have the full HD quality post render. You just have to go to preference/playback and switch back "Use original or optimized media" before exporting.

USB 2 is not going to work editing.

Thanks for the information guys.

Would my internal hard drive be good enough? Its a 5400rpm.

Or should I replace it with a SSD?

Hi Enrico

It would be a mistake to use your internal OS drive to store media and 5400 RPM is not quick enough. You need 7200 rpm as a minimum but again a single
internal drive won't run 6 HD streams.
An SSD would certainly be quick but you are not going to have much storage space. You could replace the optical drive in your MBP with a hard drive to use as the boot/os drive and the put an SSD where your current hard drive is. I think that way you can take advantage of the best SATA speed.
But any SSD over 512Gig is going to be expensive.
Something like a 4TB Thunderbolt GRaid is going to be around $525 which is probably among the cheapest raid solutions. Bear in mind that is Raid 0 so it does give great speed but no redundancy. but not that much more than s decent SSD

best wishes
