any way from FCPX to Colorista?
on Jan 11, 2013 at 5:19:58 am

Hello.

I'm looking for a way to spend more time on Color grading and have been looking at Colorista. I see that it comes as plugin for FCPX in looks, and that's a nice choice. But, I'm looking at Colorista and see that it is much more deep and specialized.

questions:

Is there a way to have a FCPX and Colorista working together?
workflow?

or is it not worth the trouble?

i really lie the many things Colorista has over looks 2 and want to have those option...but wonde if there's just not workaround since i can find many post on internet about it.

Hope so.

Thanks for feed back.

I believe Colorista works as a stand-alone plug-in as well. If not yet, it will soon. It always did with legacy FCP. I love Red Giant and, really, Looks is awesome!

Its hard to imagine Red Giant investing the time giving Color Board does so much of what Colorista did. I liked Colorista much more too, but the core integration of the CB makes it hard to beat, once you get used to it. And of course, as mentioned, all the functionality is in Looks as well, plus a ton more.

Yes, I rather stay inside FCPX too...but I'm looking for more control. Just for the shape mask and keyer and their ability to refine color correction plus they are keyframeable too.....that you can't do with de color board in FCPX or looks.

So, if i wanted to use Colorista as stand along app...how will the workflow be? export XML? export the clips separate? export the entire timeline as a quicktime?

I'm wondering how it will be and if is worth the trouble. mean while i'm using what i have.

thanks

Why not look into Resolve Lite? It's free and far more powerful than Colorista.

I'd agree with that, the latest version is much easier to get used to than previous ones

I guess there is no reason why i shouldn't download and try it. I haven't thought of it cause i thought you need special blackmagic card and other stuff i can't get right now. I'm working on iMac 2.5 GHz Core i5 with 4gb ram...didn't think i had enough power for it..but maybe i'm wrong...I will download and try.

If i use Resolve...what is the workflow with FCPX? export XML? is that one of those deals as to clean the timeline of transition and effects before exporting XML and then send back and add them again? have to do so much research.

thanks for all your help.

Peace

As an alternative, you might want to look into Yanobox Moods and Nattress Levels. Via FxFactory.

I find the FCP X Color Correction more powerful than Colorista. The shapes with the built in Color Correction are much better and easier to adjust. And the color picker is awesome too. Just remember sometimes you want to add multiple renditions of the Color Correction to do what you want to do.

There are a few things I miss about Colorista, but I also found it slow to actually do the corrections. I plan to look at Nattress Levels for the times I need a little more control.

[Brett Sherman] "I find the FCP X Color Correction more powerful than Colorista."

I do, too. The issue I have is that the color board in FCP X is applied downstream of any other effects filters.

You can export an XML, convert it using Xto7, then use Colorista in FCP7 or Premiere.
