Importing Multitrack EDL from Premiere to Scratch ?
on Jan 18, 2013 at 2:28:46 am

Hello Guys,

I'v been hired on a new project and i've just received the hard drive from the editor... THe only problem is that the movie (25mn long) contains a lot of transitions, really long ones, and sometimes you've got 4 shots blended at the same time :/ ...
Does anyone know how to import all the tracks in scratch to grade them seperately.. i only know how to do on one track, which i usually do

Thanks for the attention

Hi,

you can either go via AAF or XML, which support multi-track timelines.
Or you need to export an EDL for each track out of Premiere and conform
each EDL in Scratch into a new CONstruct.
Afterwards, you can merge all CONtructs into one multi-layer CONstruct and work on each track seperately, whilst viewing everything in context in the viewport - no big magic :) .

Hi Mazze,

I try multitrack with xml. But scratch separates each track to a new construct and fill the gabs with black instead put all together in one construct. Is this normal to merge all constructs afterwards manually to one multitrack construct or is there a way to do this automatically on conform xml?

(Can't finde in the manual/tut)

Best, dany

Hi Dany,

if the xml includes multiple video-tracks, Scratch will create one Master-CONstruct,
and multiple Sub-CONstructs (being just video-tracks).
So, if there's no material on a certain location on V1 (because it's on V2), Scratch will
make a gap (empty slot), like every other editing-tool would do as well ;-) .

Now if you go into the player ==> Edit-mode / Matrix with this multi-track CONstruct,
you can select the video-track, you want to work on, on the far left (T1, T2, Tn).
Remember, in Scratch everything is upside-down - so the track at the bottom,
actually is the top one ;-) .
This way, you only see the track, on which you are working, only so if there's a gap
in this track, Scratch will display black.
If you want to see all tracks in context, you can lock the viewport, to show the output
(it's the circle-play symbol in the transparent view-controls of the player,
where you can also zoom in and out and such), but still select the track you want to work on, on the left.

The merging CONstructs workflow only applies, if EDLs are used for conforming.
EDLs by design do not support multi-track timelines, so you would have to export
one per video-track anyways, regardless of which tool you are going^^.

Hope, this helps :) .

Mazze

Forgot:

If you do want to merge (Sub-)CONstructs for any reason,
you can do this in the Edit-mode using the flatten tracks function
in the Actions Submenu^^.

Perfect Maze,

That will save me a bunch of time (i was exporting each tracks to qtpng+alpha...then reverse assemble..)

Thanks a lot,
