I finally understand modern digital editing...
on Dec 8, 2017 at 4:57:23 pm

It’s Friday, Dec 09,2017 - and I’ve finally discovered the actual point of modern, digital editing.

Without it, this music video could not have been created.

Enjoy your weekend.

Digital, yes, but hardly modern ☺ Simply another stop on the continuum...

Oh how I used to dream of some day working for Charlex, back then! Are they still in business?

A-62 demo was always one of my favorites... I probably still have a VHS of it around. Can't find a GVG Kaleidoscope demo though.

I do have this PBS TV show I put on YouTube with a different look at the tech of the era.

Love the video. I recall building a prepackaged piece in late 1984 for Disney's Christmas Parade broadcast. A "music video" featuring one of their brass bands in EPCOT. At the end, the image turned into a rotating cube, which then separated and flew off screen on the last note. I used an NEC E-Flex with the extended effects option. It was unique enough at the time to get an on-screen reaction from the show hosts, who saw it playback live.

Regarding the, at the time, groundbreaking Bohemian Rhapsody video it shouldn't go without mention that it was literally knocked together in an afternoon for the BBC's Top of the pops program and the avant garde edit was done by Barry Stevens at the BBC. When the edit was complete it was so, at the time, radical in style that nobody knew if it would make it to broadcast, but it has now become iconic and paved the way for everything which has come along since. I just goes to show that forward planning doesn't produce something which breaks the mold. But putting together a bunch of talented people and giving them the freedom to do it their way sometimes does. Barry went on to work for Avid in the UK but I've not seen him around for a while, probably retired now, but what an achievement to look back on from that fateful afternoon.

Barry is still around. But yes, largely retired. Great guy. He was also the online editor for Zappa's "200 Motels". I think he also cut some on the Quantel Harry/Henry (?) for a while.

OTOH - it's hard to beat good, solid production planning and technique.

And of course, let's not forget some of the groundbreaking analog computer animation done with the Scanimate system (Dolphin Productions, NYC; Computer Image, Denver).

I have the Lone Rhino on vinyl. Having said that you've gotta love a man with a Big Muff who is not afraid to use it : )

Part of the charm of the original is that it at least “looked like” some guy did it himself in his spare bedroom.

Since we’re now comparing major $$$ Pro Music videos - I personally think it’s hard to beat this one from Chinese artist Jane Zhang.

In both concept and execution, state of the art.

(pun intended)
