Worx4 X - a way to trim Project media

People have been asking for this feature in FCPX for a long time. It took a third party to do it.
Of course Apple will promptly including it in the next major update 😏

Worx4 X

Note the limitations though. This may well be the same things Apple is up against (and therefore haven't implemented yet).

Worx works like a charm and is incredibly fast. If you are heavy on shooting ratio and light on storage space, this is the app you're looking for.

Although I'm concerned by

Worx4 X will not currently trim either MXF, M4A(AAC), AC3, CAF or mp3 media files, the whole file will be copied.

Since that would mean Sony cameras which use MXF aren't trimmed.

WAV or AIFF files will not be trimmed if the preferences are set to 'Copy audio files without losing metadata'. Please set this option on first installation.

This too. It's why I think Apple hasn't implemented it. I believe there are challenges to trimming certain formats without losing metadata.

Probably more because all of those long-GOP formats lose major quality when re-encoded. I don't follow how that's Apple's fault. If every camera recorded to ProRes instead of H.264 we'd be all set.

Long GOP I understand why it doesn't trim (and honestly, those are usually smaller files anyway), but MXF files like XAVC that are intraframe, would be nice to have.

I really want to use this product as I really need it. I currently use Resolve for this and would love something much simpler, But not having MXF is a show stopper. What would be really nice is a trim and transcode to, say 444 or XQ.

Optimizing everything first, sort of defeats the purpose of trimming.

Long GOP media could be trimmed losslessly. You'd just have constrain the trimming to GOP boundaries.

Is this any different than ClipExporter 2? That's what I use for this purpose. And the non-MAS version can handle MXF files.

EDIT: Nevermind, now I see it creates an XML file to reimport to FCP X, which ClipExporter doesn't.

[Noah Kadner] "I don't follow how that's Apple's fault."
It's not Apple's fault but given that many cameras record in Long GOP, Apple decided not to complicate things (IMHO). Hence no media manage feature.
Although I'd point out there are Intra Frame MXF codecs so not all MXF is Long GOP.
Of course what Apple could do is allow you to Optimize (make ProRes) XDCAM variants (XAVC-L for example) which it doesn't do now.

If you could convert ALL VIDEO to ProRes then they could implement Media Management.

If all you want is transcode to ProRes you can do this yourself with any number of dailies prep apps. I'd love it if FCPX made my dinner too.

H.264 uses much less hard disk space and requires much less sustained data transfer speeds than Pro Res. A lot of SD cards will not sustain writing speeds to record Pro Res at 4k. H.264 gives a good clean image without need for a lot of storage space or super fast storage type media.

But it's only 8bit? Not really comparable

I'd say you're right.

Personally this is nothing I need or miss, since I archive archive copies of all cards and media anyway and simply delete all media before archiving the finished library. Which then is obviously very small. This wouldn't save me anything in my workflow.

[Jeremy Garchow] "trim and transcode to, say 444 or XQ."

Huh? Wait. Isn't the whole point of this to save space??

And apparently some people haven't heard of the differences between ProRes' and H.264 color space for starters, or that there are already endless cameras that record to ProRes to SD just fine, but oh well.

[Robin S. Kurz] "Huh? Wait. Isn't the whole point of this to save space??"

Yes.

The point, for me, would to reduce many hours of footage to many minutes of footage to get over to color grade facility. I would not use this app for archive for me, as I archive everything.

What I don't do, is send all the media for a job to color grade.

I use Resolve for this, and I'd love a simpler way. Resolve is able to trim, transcode, and add handles. Typically, the media, even at 4K 444, reduces down from TBs to tens of GBs even allowing internet transfer of spots to the grading facility which is more convenient.

X2Pro, made by Marquis, already trims and embeds Audio to AAF flawlessly. Obviously, this is a much bigger task to handle with video, but I'm confident they can figure it out eventually. :)

Especially since they used to be able to do that with FCP7.

I was talking about Marquis Broadcast (the developer) being able to trim audio media (including mp3 by converting to PCM) with X2Pro. Eventually, I hope, they can apply this to Worx. Unifying a trimmed version to one codec would be excellent for my needs.

As far as FCP7, Quicktime was a beast, and still hasn't been fully replaced. My guess is that MXF files can't be written correctly, or maybe Marquis just isn't there yet. It's not an easy task.

And how many long-GOP and/or MXF formats did 7 ever support? Oh, right… 😏
