Something to do at NAB on Wednesday...
on Apr 12, 2017 at 6:22:42 pm

If your feet get tired during NAB on Wednesday about 3pm, I know where there are some comfy chairs directly across from the Convention Center at the Courtyard Marriott.

Oliver Peters, Scott Simmonds, Michael Kammes and I are doing a discussion/debate/panel about NLEs.

Lots of other great stuff in the Suite as well:
https://lumaforge.com/nab/fastertogetherstage

If you're interested, you can sign up at
http://lumafor.ge/nabstage

The sessions are all free, they just require a sign up for capacity reasons.

Stop by and say Hi!

Would totally attend if I was going to be at NAB this year. Will it be streamed?

I don't *think* so.
The sessions are being recorded for sure, but unless somebody in the crowd gets a FB Live or Periscope thing up, I know of no streaming plans. And I wouldn't hold your breath for personal feeds. I've tried to do personal streams out of NAB in the past - the number of connected users typically has the available bandwidth pretty saturated on site.

We'll all have a group hug and commit to only cutting on Lightworks or Media 100 from now on!

I'd prefer to restrict Oliver to having at least two NLEs tied behind his back at all times...

The best NLE ever - a VHS deck with a shuttle knob, burn-in tapes, and a legal pad!

The best NLE ever - an upright moviola, a set of rewinds, and 3 assistants.

you guys should get Blackmagic to give you the new Web Presenter, so you can take any cheap garbage camera, stick it into the Web Presenter, and then stick the output into any laptop, and stream it via WiFi in the hotel (it will adjust the frame rate for crappy bandwidth).

I think Richard Taylor is going to try to do some streaming. I hope he gets successfully out.

My experience in NABs years past is that the publiclly available WiFi - well, to call it "problematic" for streaming transmission would be unbelievably generous.

And to get a direct line to a booth - or to an adjacent hotel facility like where the LumaForge stage is happening is usually $$$$.

I've never once managed to stream successfully at NAB unless I had a private password into a setup where they'd payed the massive amount necessary to install a direct T1 connection or the like.

This is 100,000 plus technologically armed conventioneers ALL hitting the available WiFi bandwidth constantly.

Not pretty for a "from my iPhone to the world" scenario.

My 2 cents.

Perhaps someone there will have a 4G phone with unlimited data that you can tether to a laptop. I have unlimited data with my 4G phone (no dropping to 2 G after 20GB). I can use the Blackmagic Design Intensity Shuttle along with a DSLR camera to stream over Google Hangouts. I have been told the Intensity Shuttle works with most online streaming software but there are cheaper USB devices that would work as well. There is also free and inexpensive software that will let you use almost any DSLR cameras as a live webcam without the need for any extra USB devices. Most streaming software will see it as a webcam. The software worked with my DSLR cameras. It would probably be best to use 1280 X 720. The 4G might take a hit at NAB.

Yeap but it's same problem- 100K+ folks hitting the same couple of cell towers and that's above and beyond the normal Vegas casino crowds.

Streaming? Where's the fun in that? I'm gonna show up live and in person and heckle Oliver, Kammes, and Mr. Davis.

What no equal love for Scott Simmons? Shame on you Mark!

(Actually it will be great to see you - I'll try hard to come up with at least one wildly unsupportable flight of FCP X-centric frippery to toss out in your honor!)

I also suggested that the organizers provide us with those awesome cheap rubber inflatable fake Sumo Wrestler suits and let the battle be decided in a taped off "octagon" live match, but they nixed the idea.

Maybe next year?

Yeah, there's no practical wireless method anywhere in town that week, for anything. It's one of those things you have to experience to really get. It really is like not having a phone at all for parts of the day. Doesn't matter which provider or platform.

That said, it's been 10 years since I've been (yikes!), but there used to be ethernet in the rooms there. Setting up a private network should be child's play.

I dunno, I wouldn't rule this out. I certainly understand not making it part of the marketing plan in case it doesn't work (and I can easily imagine them losing the ethernet in an infrastructure upgrade since I was last there), but I don't think a lot of people get just how incredibly easy this is now. It wasn't like that even last year. It's different now. I'd plan on bringing the kit, and be prepared to bail if you have to -- but I think you might be pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to set up and how well it works.
