OT: Digital Beauty Software Options?
on May 23, 2016 at 3:43:06 pm

Just curious what y'all are using for digital beauty work - skin touch up, blemish removing, etc. Something like Digital Anarchy's Beauty Box seems popular at $199 ( http://www.digitalanarchy.com/beautyVID/main.html ) or Red Giant's Cosmo at $99 ( http://www.redgiant.com/products/cosmo/ ).

Any other recommendations? Any experience with either of the two above listed products....good or bad?

Ryan,

I use Digital Anarchy's Beauty Box. Jim Tierney is great and quick with any tech support issues and they are a great company with each update being more speedy.

Just a happy user.

+1 for Jim at Digital Anarchy. Very quick to respond to my queries about Flicker Free which is excellent. Doing doco work I have not had call for Beauty Box so I was surprised when the Boris version, Beauty Studio turned in an upgrade to Continuum 10 (OFX). I did use it recently on a promo for a one woman show for this years Edinburgh Festival.

I shot two camera - Blackmagic 4K on a wide shot and my new Ursa Mini 4.6 on closeup. The Ursa mini is so sharp (naturally not electronically) that I thought of using a bit of diffusion on the CU and instead tried Boris Beauty Studio which really easily gave a great and flattering result which matched the wide shot. Client was ecstatic. So I can't tell you how it compares to Beauty Box but it is very easy and very effective. So if you want a big package of plugins like Boris Continuum then the latest version is very comprehensive. Happy user.

I've been using Magic Bullet Cosmo for the same reason. Blackmagic Cinema Camera on the wide, and the UM 4.6 on the closeup. I'm thinking about grabbing Blackmagic and Pro Mist filters because the Ursa Mini picks up so much detail.

I'm loving the detail Shawn. It made all my Canon lenses suddenly look sharper which helps on the 70-200 with 2 x doubler.

To filter on location or post? I did trial the Tiffen filter plugins and I am tempted with this new camera to have them in the arsenal. I prefer the 'choose later' option. For years I have been a champion of using really clean microphones and digital recorders and adding color in post so I am thinking along the lines of choice later rather than baking in.

I can respect that. I've always been a fan of recording 'flat' and adding dimension in post as well. I hadn't really considered the filtration plugins before, but it sounds like they're worth taking a look at.

Keep an eye out for Boris Continuum Complete 10 when that comes out for FxPlug. I've been using the new Beauty Studio plugin in the other hosts and it's very nice. It's pricey, and might not be economic if all you want is beauty work, but it's a great package to have as a whole, and brings Motion much closer to After Effects in terms of plugins.
