Resolve 12.5 as NLE

I'm sure by now a number of you have been playing with Resolve 12.5 beta as an editing tool. Since it's the closest to a hybrid between a traditional track-based editor and FCPX, what are your thoughts? Is the performance there yet in the Edit mode?

Not for me, but I'm only on a Mac Pro with ATi 7950 car, it has definitely improved though!

I have a similar configuration. Improved in what way? Performance? Other?

Performance, I'm getting close to real time playback, previously I was only getting 15fps maximum on HD AVCHD footage. 4K XAVC performance is slower, but still better than PPro. I haven't tried ProRes or using Proxies yet

It has improved but Final Cut is still my preferred tool of choice. Resolve works best with ProRes material, just from my experience. Without out it expexct choppy playback (at best) and long render time. I would not edit anything above 2K on my current Mac Pro as it is the old cheese grater variety. No major issues with HD though ProRes gives best playback performance. A high end Mac Pro may yield better results. Now if Resolve had that magnetic timeline like Final Cut Pro jas, that would be great. I am serious!

David, from a demo I saw, I thought Resolve 12.5 had edits now that optionally included pushing along your clips when you insert a new clip. Isn't that like the magnetic timeline? I just recntly had to replace a broken iMac with a maxed-out iMac 27" 5K and am shortly beginning projects that I hope I can do completely within Resolve. Will be working with ProRes HD or 2K CinemaDNG raw with no green screen or CGI.

Eric, waiting for Resolve 14?

Completely unsubstantiated rumour is that Resolve 12.5 may be followed by Resolve 14.

Does Resolve 12.5 still have to convert any non ProRes codecs to a virtual ProRes on the fly in 32bit float space?

FCP X does something similar but autoscales the quality depending on system performance in 'better performance'.

Walter wrote a couple of very nice articles about editing in Resolve that are worth reading.

And here's part 2.

Walter has given my part 3, and I should have it posted tomorrow. Just as you'd hope from any trilogy, the finale is worth the wait. :-)
