Possibly the best feature ever discovered in FCP X. Impossible in Pr! lol

Use OPT-CMD-T (or CTRL-CMD-SPACEBAR) to use Emoji/Symbols to "name/rate" things. this could get ugly...

Credit where it's due...Here's the original tip using symbols...

Wherever your NLE allegiance lies (if you even have one)...can you even imagine emoji support in Avid bins? Ever?
I think if it's enabled by the OS, all your media would automatically go offline in protest.

Seems to me this is another shining example of how this isn't a tool meant for professionals. Then again, I really loved Bruce the Yak from the early editions of FCP Legacy (What? A professional NLE with a cartoon yak that comes out and eats grass on the screen if you are idle for too long!?!)...and was sad to see him go in FCP 6.

Perish the thought that people actually have fun while editing!

In the wise words of our friend Bruce, "I’m glad it’s getting weird again. I didn’t understand it when it wasn’t weird."

Media offline due to not allowing fun = boring.

I know huh? I've been cutting in Pr quite a bit lately. It is a fine, capable, full featured NLE. And working in it sucks the life out of me.

Exactly. I have been cutting some on CS6 and unless the cloud version is sooo much better (cue Aindreas), it feels like work....thanks, I'll pass unless the pay is good. ;-)

I know exactly what you mean, Charlie. If I had to work in FCPX all day I would feel like the Apple Way of Doing Things had drained every last breath of creative methodology from my very soul. :) The interface alone would have had me comatose within hours. It's great thing there's choice in this wonderful world :)

All Best,
David

Can you define that?

[Charlie Austin] "Can you define that?"

Sorry, no. It's rather a big subject and I really don't have the time being busy as I am installing all the variety of Windows software I use on a daily basis on a brand new X99 chipset screamer. Besides anyone who moves freely back and forth between different computer ecosystems understands what I mean: Apple makes simplified software interfaces by limiting initial choices. That doesn't mean the software is necessarily less functional, once you dive beneath the surface. But the surface can be a matter of taste. FYI I have a late 2013 RMBP in my arsenal, a fine machine.

The simplest definition is by negation: I'm not on an Apple hardware cycle of waiting 3-4 years for a new generation of machines only to find that they may require a whole new investment in peripherals, be inadequate to my needs, and/or destructive to my wallet.

But here's an Anandtech description of the platform http://www.anandtech.com/show/8557/x99-motherboard-roundup-asus-x99-deluxe-.... Probably make a fine Hackintosh, if one had the need.

Actually, my 'can you define that" question ( a nod to a previous post) was my way of asking you to list the machine's specs.
I am interested to know how the new chipset performs.

Hard to say. it depends on your use. This is an office machine for running all my administrative software. Neverthless with an i7 5820 6/12 core 3.6GHz CPU and 16GB of 4 way DDR4 2133 ram (not overclocked though the ASRock MB is built for it) and running all my background software it's it's still 25% faster than my 2010 dual xeon 8/16 heavy iron system rendering out a Lightwave 3D scene ( non-GPU ) and 90% faster than the late 2013 MBP under Bootcamp - both with no other processes running.

So for me it's very fast and I'm now contemplating a new dual Xeon system based on the equivalent C612 dual Xeon chipset. http://www.tweaktown.com/reviews/6866/asus-z10pe-d8-ws-dual-cpu-intel-c612-...

Thanks David for a very informative reply.
I currently have 2 8-core 2687 W Xeon processors with 64 GB of DDR3 and a Quadro 5000 graphics card.
The system runs very well, has been since I built it 2.5 years ago.
Although I am now lusting after the new 18-core processors, 128 GB of DDR 4 and the Quadro K 5200, the X99 platform has got my attention especially since I can max it out (8-core CPU, 128 GB of DDR4 and 2 Titan graphics cards) at a fraction of the cost of the dual Xeon system.

In terms of costs the dual xeon DDR4 ECC ram is prohibitively expensive at the moment and a non-ECC X99 system is much better value. BTW you can drop a Xeon into the X99's socket and I don't think it will require ECC ram.

That's an avenue of thought I'll definitely explore.
Thanks for the heads-up.

This was meant as a joke....but....

Avid once allowed all sorts of interface customization. Dozens of UI elements and color highlights could be tweaked. Everything was on the table. Some people went nuts and came up with some pretty garish combinations of colors and rendered it almost unrecognizable. Avid promptly took out the ability to do this. admitting it was due to branding and interface consistency concerns.

You're kidding, right?. It means that FCP is like any other app that can use symbols in in text input leaving the decision whether or not to use them to the user.

Figured as much. :-) I miss Bruce too. Never could find the damn resource in FCP, I looked really hard. I did find all the strings with his sayings... I'll have to dig that out,..

I have a whole bunch of screen snaps of his sayings. And I knew the secret on how to get him to appear in FCP 6...it was VERY complex, and took me 3 attempts each time, at least. But totally wiped by FCP 7.
