Editor/writer Oliver Peters shares his work flow on a recent project that was shot on RED, edited in FCP X and graded in Resolve 11. Interesting read.

Hi, I can confirm this works very well. At my company we do it the same way, and also my former work at Gyro in Oslo, is also doing it like this.

More or less 100% the same, except we always do sound on camera and very seldom on seperate recorder. Also we do soundwork in Nuendo and not ProTools. But the same workflow.

XML to AAF and then into Nuendo, works perfectly.

Ive been working with that workflow along with Avid MC and Pro Tools for weeks (well technically over a year in some broken up capacity).
But of late Ive been testing the Synchronize Clips option from FCPX to Resolve then to Avid.
Oliver what was the reason for not using the Auto Sync?
from the 800 plus R3D clips I had to work with (sync to Sound Devices WAV files), I got maybe 80% bang on so I had to do the manual version (Open in Timeline option).
Was there a particular reason you avoided the FCPX Sync option?

[Eric Santiago] "Oliver what was the reason for not using the Auto Sync?"

My question, as well. I have had great success with the Autosync option.

I should have. Conceptually a synchronized clip appears to be no different than doing the "open in timeline" thing. I think in earlier versions, it also dropped source timecode, but that's been fixed now. Early on there were issues with synch clips and Resolve, but that's probably been fixed by now. Obviously there are some differences in the synch clip versus "open in timeline" after all that burned me on this one.

Oliver is right. Sync Clips in FCPX made the timecode of that clip 00:00:00:00 and you could not change this in any way.
This gave a lot of people grievances when they sent that to Resolve.

I think it was only 10.1.2 recently that fixed this, and you could choose the timecode. BTW, very glad Apple finally listened to that one.

Thanks for the article, Oliver. I always am happy to read your articles.

Oliver,

Is it possible to migrate keywords from Resolve into FCP X?

Thanks,

David

Not that I'm aware of. Not the same data structure. The exported FCPXML is only for the sequence, not the entire set of media sources in the bin/browser.

Thanks Oliver for clarifying.
With FCPX 10.1.4, R11 and Avid MC, I received complaints from the Avid editor (last feature I worked on) that some of the audio was off by a few frames and more.
This was clips synced in FCPX > XML > R11 > AAF > Avid MC.
After working with over 800 R3D files, they just turned around and said they would do it manually to keep the timecode intact.
I didnt get a chance to see what their workflow entails and why it didnt work out for them.
I did see a weird bug with all 16 channels intact all the way up to Avid MC even when I select only two channels.

I have caught myself wanting to say Motion X and Compressor X :-)

Wondering why Apple jumped from version 7 to X -- 10 but kept Motion and Compressor versions in number sequence. Is it because 10 is scared of 7 because 7 8 9? LOL, just had throw that corny joke in there.
