What Lion support of FCP7 means

This MIGHT be the biggest point in the FAQs. If they plan to ensure FCP7 works with Lion, they will HAVE to keep it updated when Lion gets point updates. Right? So they just promised 2 years of FCP7 compatibility, and support for third-party peripherals under Lion too.

I would think - unless someone can disavow me of that opinion - that was a pretty big deal.

Now - taking it off the shelves is a different matter. No question that was an error - but Apple rarely looks backward. Maybe 7 will end up being a free download for anyone buying X? They'd have to wait for all the existing copies to be sold - hmmmm.

Apple or most software companies haven't ever been the "HAVE TO" do anything. It's usually "should work" or "planned to function" you hear.

We had issues a few years back when I think CS1 came out where AE and FCP had a massive conflict. Adobe blamed Apple and Apple blamed Adobe. Yet both claimed "it should work…". I wouldn't put to much faith in a statement like that more than it's Apples intentions to keep FCP7 workable under Lion.

Well, yes. They've just made a public statement that FCP7 will continue to work under Lion. That means every point release that Lion gets which breaks FCP7 will require a pro apps update - or at least a warning not to update yet.

If Apple were to break their own software with their own update, they would surely be liable for refunding anyone using FCP7 if it was permanent. That just seems like a sensible assessment to me.

I understand the choices you've made Walter. I think I'll take more time over mine. I can wait with FCP7 still being the best tool in MY workflow (importing material and XMLs from EVS networks and total tapeless workflows). Good luck with the future - I'm sure in the end, your clients will support you in any choice you make. After all, they're hiring YOU - not your gear. I've been reminded of that several times this week.

You're reading far too much into this. What Apple has committed to is that FCP runs under the Lion release in July. Nothing more...

No - they said "Final Cut Pro 7 will work with Mac OS X Lion". Not FCP 7 will work with OSX10.7.0. I would imagine, as I said, that this was a pretty unambiguous statement of intent. I think it's more like 'reading something into it" to say it won't.

Hmmm, back to blind faith in Apple, after such a rude week of user abuse? No wonder they can continue to get away with this stuff.

It's sort of like the whole debacle ofter FCPX and who it's target audience is. Apple made it clear in April it's for us pros. Apple made it clear in June they didn't quite understand us pros (or chose to disregard our needs).

I wouldn't put to much faith in Apples statements. If it works - great! But I wouldn't put money on FCP7 working "flawlessly" for the next 24 months or so before MacOSX 10.8 comes out.
