upgrading mid 2010 mac pro
on Mar 25, 2014 at 6:59:40 pm

I'm thinking about getting a new graphic card for my mac pro. It currently has a ATI Radeon HD 5770 1024 MB. I'm looking at either the Sapphire HD 7950 3GB GDDR5 or the EVGA GeForce GTX 680.

If there is another suggestion I would be interested.

Would either of these cards help with Final Cut X

Thanks,
Tony

i put a Sapphire 7950 in my 2010 8-core Mac Pro (upgrading from a 5870), and have noticed a huge boost in performance, especially in Mavericks.

In what ways did you see an improvement? Does it help with Final Cut?

Thanks,
Tony

It does help with Final Cut X. I use both a 23-inch Cinema Display and a 27-inch LED Cinema Display, and it felt like the 5870 was really lagging having to drive both displays and handle rendering, complex timelines, and the like.

With the 7950, everything feels much much smoother; with both displays running, rendering/exporting times have greatly improved, and there's a lot less (mostly zero) lag when dealing with large/complex timelines. I recently cut a music video shot with the RED Scarlett camera, and edited using the RAW 4K media and the whole process was smooth as silk. I'm sure having 42GB of RAM helped a great deal, but that's my experience.
