Do you mean Randy Ubillos? He headed the project, not a beta tester.

Yes, I saw those videos this morning.

What you can't see off camera is the sniper wearing and Apple shirt with a death ray pointed at Steve Martin's head.

Ripple Training may well have their first set of tutorials live within a few days of the FCP release.

nah - fair enough he's on an NDA - and I really do think apple have cats to pull out of bags - i have faith - but it's just that they're pushing everyone so hard to the cliff for a mystery reveal.. it feels a little wrong.

We're not going to tear into the packaging and pull out a slim slab -we're just going to try and go to work with it.

[Aindreas Gallagher] "and I really do think apple have cats to pull out of bags"

And Apple is all about cats. Lion being the next one . . . and FCPX taking advantage of it.

[Aindreas Gallagher] "it's just that they're pushing everyone so hard to the cliff for a mystery reveal.. it feels a little wrong."

Sine I think the radical changes in FCPX are tied to some archetecture which itself was/is still in development (Lion, Quicktime AV underpinnings, Thunderbolt to some extent) it hasn't developed as quickly as people would have liked. Just a guess but I think part of the reason why FCP7 2009 didn't have a lot of what people were asking for is that Apple was already looking at what would become FCPX and devoting resource to that new architecture rather then expending resources on architecture that they knew they were in the process of leaving behind.

[Aindreas Gallagher] "We're not going to tear into the packaging and pull out a slim slab -we're just going to try and go to work with it."

Even this is one of the major architectural changes. There's a major production chain savings for Apple as they no longer need the lead time and cost to manufacture disks, packaging, warehousing, shipping, the entire production, order, distribution pipeline. This massive savings is why they can drop the price.

The result should be increased market share due to lower cost to the consumer and lower cost for Apple, increased Mac sales (and people still think they only want to sell iPads and iphones) and with that market share increase a BIG motive for both hardware and software support by third parties. Don't forget Thunderbolt in all this and how the growing market share will be a major boon to hardware manufacturers.

and of course the whole announcement i imagine was because they got wind of Avid's new deal and wanted keep FCP Pro users onside. not sure they have achieved that.

[Nick Price] "not sure they have achieved that."

I think they did. I think a lot of people are waiting to see what happens in June for $299 before spending $1000 plus any hardware changes to move to Avid. That adds up when you're a multi-seat facility.

If you're talking about the Avid cross-grade offer, I think that that was Avid reacting to Apple actually. That did not precede the sneak peek.

And even if it had, it still would have been Avid reacting to Apple -- to the long-term pattern of Apple's cheaper products encroaching on traditional Avid markets. It's kind of nuts to label Apple as the defensive party in the fight for the future of video editing.
