Just to put it out there, but the 64 gig RAM from OWC is $895. The 64 gig RAM upgrade from Apple is $1140 with small business discount. The Apple RAM is covered under Applecare and you don’t have to install anything. This is probably the closest to normal RAM prices I’ve ever seen from Apple, so I’m going with the preinstalled RAM.

I agree. The price difference isn't enough to tempt me after my last bad RAM experience. A fluke I know, but I'll find some other way to save $500 on this machine, like going with the 512GB SSD instead.

Is after market RAM generally considered very risky? Still trying to decide if I put my budget into Apple RAM when I buy.

As someone who got burned, I would say no- it's not terribly risky. I've done it many times on other computers.

In years past it was a much easier decision to go after market because the price-spread was so much wider. If you bought your RAM from Apple you were paying a huge convenience premium.

In recent years the price gap as narrowed somewhat, but the stigma of MASSIVE overcharging still lingers.

In this case, with that price gap, I'll find my savings somewhere else. But it IS $300.

I have typically bought 3rd Party over the years.

I've had exactly one memory problem, and it was covered under lifetime warranty.

I had to revert back to the original ram for a day while the other was expedited to me.

If the price seems OK here, I will probably just go with Apple.

3rd party RAM is not particularly risky as long as your vendor has a lifetime warranty.

OWC is a great choice of vendors, btw.

I was a big advocate of 3rd party RAM. In this instance however I'm not very interested in pursing it because nobody has actually done a user replacement RAM on this particular computer. We don't really know how easy or hard it is, how long it will take OWC to get the RAM to us, etc.

So ready for it to be here! Please be 3 day shipping!!!

How are you making a call on which processor to get? I'd pull the trigger tomorrow but I need to see some real-work FCPX and Motion specific benchmarks with the various CPUs.

I was told to get 8 core for Final Cut Pro and 12 core for after effects & graphics. Both machines maxed out.

Yeah, I caved. Went for the 8-core with everything else maxed out.
