technicolor blog post about FCPX displaying a brighter image than what it should be

Hi there,

In order to gather information about the dreaded gamma shift of h264 videos mainly when uploading on youtube and vimeo, I came across this post on the technicolor blog.

blog.technicolorcinestyle.com/blog/bid/3...onitors-and-programs

In their tests, they use a ramp from pure black to pure white and they say mainly 2 things.

1.

"The result: there is an inherent gamma correction inside FCP X that displays images a little too bright and slightly de-saturated. Be aware of this gamma shift when moving from final Cut Pro 7 to Final cut Pro X."

[i.e. all other programs, PPro & FCP7 are correct. Only FCPX is wrong and brighter]

2.

"These graphs show the signal is being legalized for the scopes. A legal signal was introduced for the TV mastering industry and it shrinks the full dynamic range of a 10-bit signal from 0 – 1023 into 64 – 940. There is absolutely no reason for these tools to falsely display the pixel values as legal.

Even the actual screen representation of the pixels is correct in full range.

The result: Only Technicolor Color Assist shows a correct waveform monitor, all the other applications are showing it wrong."

What do you think of this guys ?

Thanks

There is definitely something up.... Cineassist doesn't track to X. But X on my MBP screen compares well to the same video when shown on my Panasonic HD TV streaming from Vimeo on the Apple TV.

My FSI calibrated monitor is immensely flatter and darker than my iMac. But the scopes on the FSI are identical to the scopes in FCP X.

It's amazing how much B.S. some people will try to pull on you just to sell you some software.
