Isn't that a first?

There must be big news?

We are not on Kansas anymore?

No. They live-streamed their event last October, and the WWDC 2012 keynote was streamed too.

So do we get to see the new MacPro?

I'd give it 60%

Yeah. I think the real reason to put any weight behind it is that this even is the ONLY one I could imagine where this product would get any stage time. The iPhone/iPad events in the fall, even if they contain Mac updates- the MacPro is too niche and geeky to spend any time on.

If this is a substantial update, then they'll want to talk about it. And WWDC is the only venue that makes sense. So even if it's a pre-announcement, I think now is the time.

And the only software they have to showcase the power of it would be FCP X. I give about a 30% chance of a glimpse of some new X features or something. Maybe Motion. But Motion is already pretty slick on the current hardware. There's a question. If X and Motion share the same rendering engine, why don't they share the same RT capability. Motion's RT is just insane. I'd like to see that in After Effects. And FCP X.

[Bret Williams] "And the only software they have to showcase the power of it would be FCP X."

My fantasy demo would be to see multiple real time scopes in FCPX. Perhaps seeing four live scopes with each of the dual viewers with Ganging. Of course there are many improvements that dual GPUs would help but that would be a great visual demo.

Sorry to ask the obvious but would this be the page to actually SEE the live stream?

Honestly I don't remember them doing recent live video streams. I do remember them uploading the event very shortly after it happened though.

Yeah. The streamed their iPadMini event last October- it was the first time they put the new Apple Events channel up on the AppleTV. And WWDC2012 was as well.

[Marcus Moore] "it was the first time they put the new Apple Events channel up on the AppleTV."

Thanks. If only there was an expansion of available channels. Roku keeps looking very attractive although AirPlay is nice. Certainly opening up AppleTV channel development (HLS as well as Apps) would be a good WWDC topic. How's that for going off on a tangent.

I think it's very apt. Right now, "channels" are the only type of 3rd party apps that make sense for the current model of aTV. So I'd love to see them do something with that.

I don't know how anyone expects aTV to get games or other apps when there's only 8GB of internal storage and most of that is needed for video streaming.

But honestly, I've yet to see a compelling reason to put games on the aTV. There's no native control interface that makes sense. And you can already airplay games and some video content from an iPhone or iPad.

I think the focus for aTV's development is the delivery of video content- at least in the short term.

I don't think Apps have to be games per se. They can be simple web apps, not sitting in the aTV itself, that have useful functions. In other words if they can do HLS there may be a way to have simple HTTP based apps which are hosted online and accessible from aTV.

Airplay is awesome. I really truly think it is the greatest thing since sliced bread (toasted).

But

It doesn't make up for apps. I can airplay Netflix, and HBO Go, but Netflix native to the AppleTV is much easier to use.

The HBO Go app is pretty cool, especially on an iPad, but having Netflix accessible to the AppleTV is much easier to control, and I don't have to constantly monitor the device that's doing the AirPlaying.

Also, anyone in the house can access Netflix if they turn on the tube, and they don't have to have a specific iDevice with all the specific iOS app passwords, etc.

Even further down the tangent line: I recently picked up an AppleTV at a tag sale (score!) and other than airplay, I prefer my Roku in almost every way. I think that when Apple opens up for apps on the AppleTV, it's be pretty great. WWDC is as good a place as any to announce that.

I do think this is a big competitive issue for Apple. From what I've heard, aTV is outselling Roku significantly (and it may well be due to increased sales since AirPlay) but I can't help but think if Apple wants "TV" they MUST open up channels to developers.

Given Apple's business models I see Apple taking a piece of the action on pay channels and advertising (iAds) on the "free" channels.

Otherwise, over time, Roku would overtake Apple on this front IMHO.
