Adobe clarify reverse compatibility for After Effects CC

Todd Kopriva:

"There is a command in After Effects CC to save a project as a copy that After Effects CS6 can open. We intend to have that command in all versions going forward. (Of course, some features won't save backward, since they weren't in CS6.)

That's actually kind of a big deal really. That was one of my real problems. PS reverse compatibility is a given. XML is pretty robust, but it was the idea of locking all my mograph whatevers in rented software was really not on my wish list. Its largely psychological this - but knowing that if for whatever reason, I want to shut down CC - I can actually fall back to my copy of Prod.Premium 6 largely unscathed. That does make something of a difference.

That functionality's been there all the time. In AE CS6 you can save your project files as a 5.5 file, simply by choosing that option under "save as".
Just normal stuff which will also be in CC.

Not really no, it hasn't been there all the time. 6 was the first time they included a save as 5.5 - but to be specific - for whatever reason, adobe after effects wasn't on the adobe published list of applications with CC reverse compatibility to CS6. That came up in another conversation.

CS 5.5 was the first version with down-save. It could go back to CS5. I use CS5.5 as an intermediate a couple times a month to go from CS6 down to CS5.

Here's a COW post [link] from Steve Forde, senior product manager for Ae:

[Steve Forde] "Ae allows you to save one version back with each version. Ae CC will allow you to save a .aep in CS6 format.

Also - CC members will have access to all versions of the products starting with CS6. In other words - it's 2018 and you can download and install Ae CS6 or any version in between."

I didn't even realise 5.5 could go to 5. Wildly attentive I am.

Yep, like Walter, I have done it before myself. Life saver.

Aindreas, this is a bit of a "techniques" post, but you should check out Paul Tuersley's awesome pt_OpenSesame script [link]. It outputs (and inputs) human-readable XML so you can translate Ae projects all the way back to CS3. It's not without limitations, but it really works pretty well.

It's good to know AE has backwards compatibility now. That makes me feel better about the cloud.

Of course, the downside to going backwards is the big, new, long-awaited feature in the next version (Cinema 4D) will be useless in CS6...

I have my problems with Adobe. But Joe Schmo? Really?

Joe (IF THAT'S EVEN YOUR REAL NAME), the word is SCHMO.

I'm sorry that any of you had to see that, but I confess. I didn't catch it any earlier because I cut out early to see Guardians of the Galaxy. (Highly recommended, btw.)

What a pathetic name to use for hit and run trollery. Weak. He wasn't even trying. (Surely a he, yes?) Didn't even have enough pride in his fake name to spell it correctly. I'd have probably killed the account just for the misspelling, but anyone dropping the f-bomb and the h-bomb (hate) had better bring some game to the post.

And yes, that is official COW policy. "F-bombs must be accompanied by GAME. Failure to bring game to a post with the F-bomb will result in immediate termination of account."

And I should perhaps amend the policy to include bringing game to YOUR NAME.
