FCP7 Sequence... How To Open In Both FCPX and Premiere Pro?
on Mar 22, 2013 at 7:59:32 pm

Hello Folks... sorry if this repeats... I'm currently searching for the correct info and thought it smart to post here as well.

My 2008 Macbook Pro died (logic board). It was connected through eSATA to a 5 bay enclosure and I was organizing and beginning the edit (FPC7) on a film that I shot in India over the past 4 years.

I've bought a new Macbook Pro 2.7Ghz (OS 10.8.3) but it will not let me instal FCP7 (dmg) so I can not open the previous FCP projects.

I have FCPX installed but it won't open the previous FCP sequences. I also have CS6 installed. I want to try both programs to get a feel for them and then select one as my standard.

Would someone kindly chime in here and help point the way so that I can continue with this wonderful (and frustrating ;)) process?

Looking forward... :)
Jona

Well, to get a project from FCP 7 to FCX you need 7toX from intelligentassistance.com

http://www.philiphodgetts.com/2012/01/7tox-for-final-cut-pro/

To get from FCP to PPro CS6, export an XML and import that XML in CS6

Wonderful Shane!

One more question? Suppose I used a friend's mac (FCP6-7) to export my FCP7 sequence as an XML... would FCPX be able to read it?

Huge thanks :)

Best regards,
Jona

No. FCX cannot import a project or sequence from FCP without 7toX.

Period.

End of line.

"Good new and bad news. The good news is that you can easily do what Shane points out above. The bad news is that you need to open the project in FCP 7 to export the XML that's necessary for either importing to Pr or using 7toX to get it into X. You don't need the media online to do it, perhaps you have a friend who could open the project and export XML for the sequence(s) you'd like to open?"

Hey Charlie (Shane)
So then I actually have to find a Mac with FCP7 on it so that I can open my project and export an XML file. Correct?
My friend is running FCP6. Will this work?

@Neil
I'm not sure why either. I think I have read that my Mac's HDD would have to partitioned to run both FCP7 and FCPX on the same Mac. When I go to instal FCP7 the little FCP box is greyed-out. FCPX and PP6 is already on the system.

6 won't work, since your project is newer (7) it won't open. You don't need to partition, they just can't both run at the same time. I'm not sure why you can't install either, i just installed 7 on a brand new machine. I used a new FCP studio (FCP 7.0.3) install DVD though. I read somewhere that some of the older installers used PPC code, and that won't work on OS X lion and above. :-(

@Neil

"I used a new FCP studio (FCP 7.0.3) install DVD though."

- Yes, and I... I continue wrestling with these silly dmg files now that my new Macbook does not have a DVD burner.

As I don't have a concrete answer yet, I am just going to assume that I need FCP7 to export an XML file so that I can use: http://assistedediting.intelligentassistance.com/7toX/ to get the file to FCPX. Would still like to know this for sure if anyone can say for sure.

Very much appreciate you chiming in here :)

[Jona Taylor] "Thanks Charlie! :)"

No problem. :-) FWIW, I'd invest in a USB Superdrive, especially if you have no other Mac's around to use disc sharing...

Also, assuming you've got a fairly complete sequence, when you open it in X or Pr, your head is going to explode. Since you own it, I'd see what I could do to get 7 installed so you can work, and then open it in X or Pr to get used to them first.

Absolutely will do Charlie. Thanks for the tip.

I wonder... if anyone knows if the FCP7 dmg would instal after some kind of file structure (folder) modification... as a work around?

Can you mount the dmg? If so, is there a file somewhere on it (in a folder or something) with the extension .mpkg? the "install final cut" thing might not run, but if you can find the actual installer (the mpkg thing) maybe it will run? Just a random thought which may be completely wrong....

edit: I am wrong... are you sure the installer you ave is for final cut 7? Because the FCS 2 (FCP 6) installer won't work at all, but the FCS 3 (final cut 7) installer will. Maybe you updated to 7 somewhere along the line but have an installer for 6? You can install an update version of 7 as long as you have your *original* serial # as well as the one for the updater. Good luck! :-)

[Jona Taylor] "When I go to instal FCP7 the little FCP box is greyed-out."

Because you already have FCPX.

I'm going to burn FCP7 as a disc image onto an small external drive and see if that will behave as a DVD.
Maybe I can install it from that?

You already have an app by the same name. The answer if I remember correctly is to simply put FCP X in a folder. That's it. Then install FCP 7 to your hearts delight. Then, put FCP 7 and all it's apps in a folder called Final Cut Studio and put FCP X back in the main Applications folder. It'll all work just fine after that, with the exception of sending to motion wonkiness. If you're in a position that you want to do that, you'll have to move X into a folder, and put the FC Studio suite back in the main app folder.

It sure as hell is a lot simpler than all this partitioning business or having a different boot drive, etc.

FYI.

After the first entry of the link posted (which says to partition the drive), it tells you exactly how to do it, including how to modify the correct permissions.

Huge thanks as well Jeremy! :)

I'll keep your partition suggestion guidance in mind in the event that I start having conflict on my system.

Best wishes and have a wonderful weekend... I know I will!

[Jona Taylor] "I'll keep your partition suggestion guidance in mind in the event that I start having conflict on my system."

Partitioning is just the fist suggestion. Move past it.

The other suggestions are on how to install all of the applications if you can't partition. It's worth reading.
