In LA and interested in X's Multi-cam?
on Jan 17, 2013 at 8:52:25 am

...or merely one of those who hang here and who want to tell me in person why I'm deeply and totally off-base about FCP-X - here's your big chance!

I’m traveling to LA next Tue - (Jan 23) to do a presentation at the LACPUG meeting about my 14-camera project cut in FCP-X. (details at http://www.lacpug.org)

Doors open at 6pm or so - I'm scheduled to start babbling at 7:40.

Overripe tomatoes are kinda discouraged but questions - even grumpy ones - are all fair game.

Hope some of the board regulars will leave their "edit caves" and join in the fun!

Odd.
I would have thought the group would have changed the URL when they changed the name.
Thanks for pointing it out. Unfortunately I can't edit it now that there's a reply... Catch 22!

I hope those are head shots behind Bill and not some girl he's been stalking.

It's almost a cliche wall shot in serial killer slasher movies.

Funny you should mention those.

As a production company, we do a good bit of casting. And yes, they are agency head shots since that photo was taken during pre-production for a large corporate video a while back.

Since everyone likes production disaster stories....

Early in our production career, I realized that it would be smart to let my wife do the majority of our casting. It's been mostly great. But we had one situation we still laugh about...

We needed a male and female couple to do some hiking shots up in scenic Sedona. Linda and Anne from our team had "every half hour" auditions all day, and were having trouble casting the guy hiker - when late in the day (after 5pm) this guy walks in obviously directly from work in his suit and tie - and I could see that they both thought he was PERFECT. The ladies particularly wanted to look closely at his hands, since he'd have some prop handling in close up. So he gets the gig. We all drive up the next week to the location and as we pull into the motel for our 4 days of shooting - the guy we'd cast is out by the pool... SPORTING FULL SLEEVE TATTOOS on both arms. YIKES. Not the look the client was expecting!

Our make up artist (extremely experienced!) tried full arm "cover up" - no go. We ended up having to drive to a store and buy a long sleeve shirt for him, but it looked pretty dumb with both of the talent in shorts hiking on a sunny day - but with him wearing long sleeves rolled totally down.

From that shoot on, I think Linda has agreed that asking talent to show up in swimwear for future castings actually has it's place when you're going to be burning through money on location.

Ah the joys of video production!

Nice story Bill. I did a promo shoot for a singer who was doing a one woman show about songs from the London Blitz. We had the same issues with arm tattoos and used all sorts of things to cover the tatts with varying success.

After spending half the shoot time in makeup I muttered that the next show better be called "Tatts Dawson - Gangster & Moll". Well a year later Ms Dawson duly performed Tatts Dawson to a packed audience. Shame I didn't get royalties for the creative concept.

Ha! I found a still from that "Hiking in Sedona" shoot burried on my drive!

Dude (who was a really nice guy, btw) looks totally natural, huh?

Actually I was drawn to how underdressed she was for hiking. Therefore the shot works beautifully. :)

And totally supporting my decision to let ladies do all my primary casting over the years.
As sages have long noted "a battle avoided is often a battle won" (except for tattoos, I guess!)

In following the thread about the head shots behind Bill I wonder if anyone else thinks that he has slightly more than a passing resemblance to Simon Cowell - no offence Bill :-)

best wishes

[Neil Patience] "more than a passing resemblance to Simon Cowell"

Well, perhaps except for the "my being significantly older, fatter and poorer" thing.

Ces't la vie!

Weird.

http://www.flacpug.com doesn't work either.

http://www.lacpfug.com you say? Also busted.

What is my problem?

It's not your problem Jeremy.

The group was the Los Angeles Final Cut Pro Users Group for about 10 years. LAFCPUG.

A year or so ago, they did a modest rebranding as the LACPUG Los Angeles Creative Pro Users Group - to be more ecumenical towards all creative types.

It appears they never changed the groupn name acronym to reflect that and LAFCPUG.ORG is still in use.

I got it wrong in my initial post assuming they changed the web addy to reflect the new branding.

Should work for the splash page, with the meeting link at the bottom of the page under "next meeting"

[Bill Davis] "It's not your problem Jeremy. "

I know, I was joking with the "missing the f" in the URL.

Apparently, my career as a comedian is still in the fledgling phase.

Hey, I laughed. Those two monitors you posted in the other thread, btw, look terrific.

Awesome. I wanted the HP, but they were out if stock everywhere.

I needed to get something as my other monitor couldn't handle the extended dvi signal anymore. I found the Viewsonic, and now I want another one!

I'll be there tonight. Being a Guru in fact. I hope you are there early so you can answer the FCP-X questions that always pop up, but stump those of us who haven't switched.

It'll be nice to meet you. Rant to your face! Kidding, I'm done ranting.
