iMac vs MacPro Shootout Part 1 - Barefeats

PRO APP SHOOTOUT, PART ONE:
'late 2012' 27-inch iMac 3.4GHz Core i7
versus five recent Macs

It seems we can see the importance of the 2012 BTO iMac GPU vs 2010 MacPro Radeon 5870.
Interesting to note how the other Quad i7 Macs fare and the lone Quad i5.

These benchmarks (not specific to ProApps) are also worth noting as we can see CPU tests as well.
SIX BENCHMARKS:

The 2012 27" iMac BTO does reasonably well in the CPU tests vs the 2010 6 Core MacPro.

It certainly brings up the "bang for the buck" factor. Sure a 12 core MacPro with a "not officially supported" GPU can exceed an iMac but one has to consider the cost relative the speed benefit.

Looking forward to Part 2 which he should post today or tomorrow.

Nice to see the 2012/2013 iMac being on-par with the almost 3 year old MacPro! ;)

Nah, but as you say - bang for the buck or "small formfactor" computer and the iMac is an interesting choice. It even beats the Quadro-cards in After Effects. I wonder how this machine fairs against the HP Z1. I also wonder how a real 2012/2013 MacPro would stand against this machine.

That would be an interesting test given the newer 4 core Xeons in the Z1 (Sandy Bridge?).
Using HP's BTO options with Xeon E3 1280 4 core and nVidia Quadro K4000M 4GB
You're at about $5000.
Drop the CPU down to Xeon E3 1225v2 4 Core and GPU to
nVidia K3000M and you're at about $3500
I believe a BTO 27" iMac with Quad i7 and nVidia GT 680MX 2GB is about $2700 or so.

Tried to link to Z1 BTO option but apparently that isn't being interpreted correctly.

I think it'll be interesting to see what Apple does with the MacPro replacement relative to price and BTO options for the GPU.
