I have just learned that the Thunderbolt adapter doesn't work on old Cameras like DV or early HDV. And as mac is dropping firewire, uploading from these cameras is going to be a problem. As I have stated before, I love using old cameras to create a certain feel (hell, I even use pixelvision, VHS, and betacam). Since Apple is dumping firewire ports altogether, this has me concerned.

I am curious if others are having issues with this and if anyone knows workarounds to get old DV or HDV cameras to connect via Thunderbolt. I'd hate to think I am gonna have to keep a row of macs frozen in time just to make use of my old cameras (space is an issue).

Ive tested a AJA I/o HD with firewire 800 with a thunderbolt adapter. Works great. As long its a powered device it should work.

Or you could buy an old Macbook for old video hardware.

Or capture s-video or component through a thunderbolt blackmagic or aja i/o

Not everything will work, as Clint notes. The device presents to the system as Thunderbolt, not Firewire, so the device must have a Thunderbolt driver to work.

Invest in an I/O device. BlackMagic, Matrox or AJA has what you need.

Well, if you keep old cameras around, you might want to keep an old computer around as well. :)

I've got a G4 and G5 I'll sell you.
