So... The 17" Mac Book Pro is Confirmed dead?

I was wandering if Apple would come out in a few months with a renewed 17" Mac Book Pro? I mean, do you remember when apple changed the Mac Book Pro design (the aluminum sandwich maker) for the present with black keyboards and a aluminum block, the 17"er was the last coming out, it took like 4 months...

Anybody has heard somebody at Apple confirming that the 17" is discontinued for good?

Sorry if I seem to be whiny, but I just donĀ“t see myself editing in a 15"

I haven't heard anything definitive but there are a couple of facts here.

The resolution of the new 15inch MBP is beyond good and could well justify that form factor as being big enough.

The former 17inch models with 1920 x 1200 and 1440 x 900 for the former 15inch pale in comparison to the new 2880 x 1800 res of the retina MBP 15inch.

I like you, always used a 17 inch because I needed the screen real estate but after checking out the new Retina model, I would buy a 15 inch for the less bulk in any case and the new resolution is fantastic.

Finally, if you need bigger screens, you can plug in SEVERAL with the new Graphics Architecture.

With thunderbolt and retina you will be editing on a 15''

I could not agree more.

Working on a 17 was about having enough real estate, the Retina certainly has that.

I have the 17", mostly because I wanted ExpressCard. I would have gotten the 15" instead of it had come with that slot.

Sonnet makes a working Express card reader that I use almost daily. Handles Sony SxS cards and 3/4 xpress adapters like those for FW, eSata and card readers, works like a charm. I bought mine for less than $150.

Only drawback for me, is now I carry a bunch of $50 cables instead of cheap FW ones.

And it's another dongle device I have to carry around with me instead of having one built in to the body itself. I prefer to be as self-contained as possible, less chance of accidentally leaving something behind.

Well that is not going to be the case for the future.

Adding internally, something that less than 20% of all users want/ need is not the way laptops are going, certainly not from Apple.

I am wonderfully happy that I no longer have to carry around a 8 lb laptop on my shoulder, even with the extra cable and connector I still keep my Retina laptop under 5lb total.

did I mention it is blazing fast too?

[gary adcock] "did I mention it is blazing fast too?"

About 10-20% faster than my i7. Wonderful.

I wouldn't care so much if a Qio came out with Thunderbolt connectivity, or when the Belkin dock finally arrives. But right now, it's the best setup you can get, in my opinion, and hopefully more Thunderbolt peripherals will be out when I decide it's time to upgrade again.

What about apps that demand a specific minimum display resolution like the Resolve UI?

Umm, what is the issue? The Retina display can handle it, Smoke 2012 works too.

I have my R-MBP set to 1920x1080 and am not having any issues with any app not working.

[gary adcock] "Umm, what is the issue? "

It used to be that pixel-density was related to screen size, so the smaller MBPs couldn't accommodate the 1920x1080 that the COLOR UI required -- and Resolve (at least up to 8) needed a minimum that you had to hack if you wanted to run it.

But was that not the purpose for the RETINA display on the Laptop?

So does the print get even tinier?

Am I the only one that sees the screen accessory from the movie "Brazil" coming out for the retina displays?

I just love this guy's movies. They are not all - if any are -great but he is not afraid to go way out on a limb.
