HPZ1 all in one workstation -foreshadows the iMacPro?

My guess is Apple would have 6 core Xeon option (HP only has two 4 core Xeon options), no optical disk, three Thunderbolt ports instead of USB3. It'll be interesting to see how Apple would handle access.

I doubt it would have a changeable graphics card like the Z1 which I certainly like. And, I think USB3 would be nice for compatibility despite thunderbolt's goodness. three thunderbolt's would necessitate two discrete chips as I understand it, so I think two will be what your box might be like. Otherwise, I think it plausible.

If the MacPro goes away it'll need a changeable graphics.

Yes. The number is a product of my own ambivalence. Apple might have one 4 Lane (two port) and one 2 lane (one port) for three port. They could do something like two 4 lane controllers (8 total lanes for 4 ports). That would be a lot of connectivity even compared to a MacPro.

The new Thunderbolt chips and Mac speculation (this has been posted in previous threads recently)

It will be interesting to see how Cactus Ridge 4C helps.
Now all Apple needs are the Ivy Bridge Xeon chips.

{Waves hand}

You don't need changeable graphics...

These aren't the workstations you're looking for...

Move along...

I got to see the Z1 at NAB up-close with case open. Very cool set-up - easy access to insides for memory upgrades etc. We asked the HP rep about Thunderbolt and it really isn't on their radar - they feel there aren't enough 3rd party peripherals etc. which was crazy talk to anyone who walked the floor - Thunderbolt was everywhere! They think USB 3 is enough at this point.

The Z1 can get very pricey when you spec it out for max. horsepower etc.

Mac Pro is not going away, just getting revamped with a smaller footprint and Thunderbolt. Waiting for IVY Bridge to be released at the end of the month for desktops.

Would that be called a MacPro?
Is this your guess?
It's kinda vague. I'll be more specific.
Two 16x PCIe 3 slots. One will have the GPU the other as you like.
No Optical drive. No 4x PCIe as Thunderbolt replaces that.
Does smaller foot print knock down the number of possible hard drives?
This is pretty much the "Pizza Box" I theorized about in the past.
I think Apple would give it a new name.

[Lance Bachelder] "Very cool set-up - easy access to insides for memory upgrades etc."

While their cases aren't sexy, they're the one company that can rival or surpass ease of access/replacement on internals.

[Lance Bachelder] "hunderbolt and it really isn't on their radar"

They've said this publicly before and I think it's going to be an Achilles Heal for them. What are you going to be able to pile on with USB3 compared to two Thunderbolt ports? Which add more expansion capability? Bad move HP IMHO.

It'll be interesting to see who, between Acer, Asus, Lenovo moves beyond the Ultrabook to full laptops and all in ones with Thunderbolt. Just my guess but I'd say Lenovo. For many, the ability to move Thunderbolt devices between Man and Windows is going to be a cost saving for many.

Agreed. I've heard the same from management folks there.

I really do think that Thunderbolt is this year's FireWire. The people who have it will crow because nothing else could possibly be important, the people who don't will say it doesn't matter that much, but nobody will hold out for long...and it won't be long until something much better comes along anyway. Well HP should have had the proper rep showing the Z1 at NAB. We walked away scratching our heads - earthquake - okay back - wondering what they were thinking...

1,900 dollars as a base configuration with, er, integrated intel graphics and an i3 CPU isn't wiiildly compelling. That just feels unnecessarily stingy. Although the lid swing gave me G3 flashbacks.
We just need to get an ice card in there, rev up AE properly.
