...I told you so!

Apple doesnt care about the pro market, at least not this side of the pro market; the market that interfaces with broadcast entities, the market that does multi platform collaboration, the market that demands consistency and the need to plan ahead, the market that is very demanding and b*tchy at times when things dont work because their livelihood depended on it.

Didnt we see this coming when they killed Xserve, FCP Sever, even the express card slot in last years MBP when it didnt even have an alternative (like thunderbolt). What they want is for us to buy their newest offering, embrace their latest technology and upgrade everytime. Its a consumer company, and it is consumerism that will drive it. FCP was a happy accident for them, and its success relies heavily on us, the user base that has found ways to work around its shortcoming via plugins, experimenting new workflows, and building a big and healthy community that will push it further.

Sadly, despite that, this product in its current, or should I say last incarnation, is not making its margins. Not when its being compared to the revenue that the iGadgets are bringing in.

Hence, the birth of FCPx. A "professional" editing tool that will run on the lastest iMacs and MBP. Thats the future now, Apple says. I wont even be surprised if they discontue MacPros in a couple of years. The desktop is no longer their playing field, its in gadgets that you can carry with one hand.

Pros and third party vendors should really review their future development plans. Theres still Windows7(gasp!), or even Linux(double gasp!), and those 2 platforms will not dictate to you how to run your business and which direction you need to take.

In the end, I'm just tired of being told "It's my way, or the highway"

Ok. Rant mode off.

I think they'll continue support for it for a while, whatever that means. But you can't buy it anymore.

I'm afraid the support for FCP 7 was most probably dropped the second FCP X went online.

Well i think TOM's rant went a bit overboard LOL

Discontinuing xserve doesnt mean they dont care about the pro market and no i HIGHLY doubt they will discontinue mac PROs soon.

What many people don't realise is that computing itself is changing, Years ago, the power that we have today in a mac mini was in PRO workstations and touted as the fastest thing ever.

Things will change and form factors will change no matter what u think, soon even the fastest open(whatever) GFX card will get small enough to fit on a credit card. and if all these things get smaller anf faster why the heck will u need PCIe slots for?(in their current form anyway)

Look it obvious FCP X is not up to par just yet, i agree. I use OMF & XML literally all the time and its not there. Color, or at least some semblance of it has been absorbed into FCP, although i will argue STRONGLY about it because it does not seem to have all the control Color had, (CURVES etc etc)

Apple does care about the pro market without a doubt. MY gripe with them is, Why the F)*&(*& would you go sell a pro app that is a down grade in functionality from your previous version and tell me you are working on it.
Work on it first and then bring it to me please. to me this is an evaluation/beta version that was sold to people. I truly don't agree. give the app to your partners like AJA, BMD etc to rewrite drivers for it. if you wanted to wait till LION came out then cool .... wait, that's right around the corner.

Don't make people buy something that is not ready. The idea im sure is for people to get used to the new paradigm, but you cant do that without certain functionality. not at this stage in the game

I think the new features are great (Timeline, speed, nesting blah blah) but we pros need just a few extras, fix it and we are there and wont turn back. And if you are integrating color, really do it, dont just give me a color pad. (lift gamma gain).

Let it be a whole hearted smoke killer

my 2 cents

The FxPlug 2 SDK for plug-in developers has only recently been added to developer.apple.com

I don't think Apple doesn't believe in the third-party ecosystem: they were just too amazingly paranoid to let developers into their plans before release.

Alex, I fear that is wishful thinking. They already showed this software to people in January and then at NAB. No new functionality came in this version from what they showed at NAB, and now we all know why they took no questions at NAB.

LOL.

Yeah. I've been holding onto my un-upgraded Avid XpressPro license for years. When I shifted to FCP 6 years ago, I raised my arms to heaven and swore I would never give the money grubbing chiselers AVID another bloody penny. Now, I not so sure...thank God there is still Adobe! Breaking a blood oath like that has repercussions!

I knew this release was going to be a bit hindered, but what good is a video editor if you can't get video out of it?

I understand it's "v1". I understand it's a work in progress. I understand more format support could potentially be supported ... but this was a really weird way release this. I'm a bit surprised at what's missing.

I also swore after 15 years of enduring Avid MC and Avid DS that I would never go back...and I wont. Adobe has developed a real powerhouse with CS5 that does just about everything I need, and more. Having AE dynamically linked to the NLE is a dream come true for me.

Avid is actually better than they used to be. And they're (slowly) starting to release their stranglehold on proprietary software. You can already monitor through several 3rd party options, capture thru one, and rumor has it that more 3rd party hardware flexibility is on the horizon.

MC 5.5 is pretty awesome. If you've got the dough, several vendors are still honoring the $995 crossgrade offer.
