Hmm, so they couldn't get a new feature out in time for NAB so they get the badly needed stability fixes out.

So Tick Tock does seem to be an establishing pattern.
10.0.5 in July I'd guess.

Also has the dialogue box showing duration AND frames trimmed when you drag an edit always been there? and did the " show detailed trimming feedback" work with connected clips before.

The x,y values are now in pixels OR percentages, when before they were in decimal percentages.

Frankly, it sucked.

Time to start speculating about new features!

Live audio mixing via roles?
Selectable render scratch?
Selectable attribute copy/paste?
Add back ProRes LT?
Versioning that does not require duplication and bloat?

Prelim results show that project bloat isn't as bad. It still swells a bit, but performance is much improved.

Just made an 1h40m compound clip and chopped it up randomly with a blade to a total of 20 items.

Project went for 10MB to 90 MBs with much better performance. This would have brought 10.0.3 to it's heels.

Trying to test this as I also do real work in FCP7 on another machine.

FCPX has caused my to neglect my day job so many times....!

Compressor and motion got updates, too.

Compressor updates are interesting.

Ability to run Compressor as an encoding node on a Mac without a monitor.
English translation: MacMini and MacPro.
So MacMini encoding clusters are in demand?

Improves performance when encoding mp4 and AVI files.
Compressor 3 didn't even do H.264 .mp4
Hey Apple cares about AVI files.

[Craig Seeman] "Compressor 3 didn't even do H.264 .mp4"

Technically, an .m4v is the same bitwise as an .mp4. But changing the suffix always felt like a hack, even if it wasn't changing any bits.

[Andrew Richards] "Technically, an .m4v is the same bitwise as an .mp4"

Yes but there were no settings controls on the iOS presets. Many people want to deliver .mp4 and need complete controls (or at least as much meager control that Compressor offers).

There's still no High Profile or CABAC entropy support last I looked.
Nor any real control over the GOP. How about some 4:2:2 color space with H.264.
H.264 Transport Streams?
Oh and improve the H.264 codec in general so it handles better at lower bit rates.

[Craig Seeman] "H.264 Transport Streams?"

Is there such a thing? I know you can wrap h.264 in an MPEG-2 TS (and Compressor does this for HTTP Live Streaming), but I never heard of an MPEG-4 TS.

Yes I meant H.264 in MPEG TS.

[Andrew Richards] "Compressor does this for HTTP Live Streaming"

Compressor shows as .mp4 though for me.
Episode, for example, is .ts for H.264 MPEG-TS.
And I can change the color space to 4:2:2 as Comcast sometimes asks for in spot delivery.

[Craig Seeman] "Compressor shows as .mp4 though for me.

The ts files that Compressor spits out for HTTP streaming are reference files that links to a series of .mp4 and .m4a files at various bitrates. It isn't muxed.

Compressor has always been rather thin (useless, even?) when it comes to transcoding for broadcast delivery (Cable Labs, etc).

Andy

You mean with Job Action Prepare for HTTP Live streaming. True those are ts in the Segments folder but I'm thinking TS for Broadcast use. Maybe I should clarify.

[Andrew Richards] "Compressor has always been rather thin (useless, even?) when it comes to transcoding for broadcast delivery (Cable Labs, etc)."

Yes, this is what I'm referring to that Compressor is missing in that area as well as "higher end" H.264 controls.

I opened up some projects with 10.0.4 that still had the old 9.2 BMagic drivers and they were stuttering and dropping frames. Downloaded the new BM driver and they play back full quality 1080 p30 proves 422 without dropping frames. They drop once they get to a rendered section in full rez. But in "better performance" mode they don't drop frames usually now for easily rendered material. Better performance mode seems to be full rez for the most part anyway.

I'll test Matrox when I get a chance, but their beta drivers were pretty abysmal before. I don't BlackMagic are calling their beta. Just 9.2.1. Works for FCP X, DaVinci, FCP 7, Adobe. Very nice.

Not sure, sadly still can't keyframe CCs.

However everything else is significantly improved for me, adding filters and titles is quicker and I've now put together a 600 clip 5 hour project and there are no beachballs when editing.

This update may not have any big new features but it is a very significant fix. Now let's see if stability is improved

I've got 48 hours to deliver the film we've been working on and then I can update.

Can't wait for the performance improvement.
All of this recent work, while not completely consoling me, has gotten me more and more used to some of the unconventional conventions that I found inconvenient.

This could make me a believer.
And don't think for a minute that the X team doesn't see itself in competition with the PP team now.

It's how I always get the best out of my people and myself - competition.

jiminee. that's a little crazy?

I've queried the following before in heat and anger when I badly wanted to slap Apple, but let's say, given that in my heart of hearts I dreamt that they were going to re-configure FCPX into something that could get past the gullet of the industry - nevertheless -

my question then and now is - are Apple, do Apple actually have the ability to put this kind of stuff out anymore? They fired a lot of critical people didn't they? Weren't there tweets from elder FCP Gods bidding farewell to core staff in 2010 that Apple claimed were non-essential?

ech.

Isn't there a case to be made that whatever is left of the in-house skill set might not be fit for purpose?

That aside - given the precarious circumstances, I find it amazing that MB looks and Sapphire are after getting randomly busted. That's a mess.

FX Factory 3.0.2 also seems to crash 10.0.4..but had this problem in a previous update and per Idustrial Revolution tech support - went into FXFACTORY preferences and hit the clean up all Motion Templates button -- did that again in this update and that seemed to fix the crashing - for now --

Still can't export a section of the timeline
Audio controls are still a 10 year leap backward (no audio mixing? Keyframing every audio adjustment? in 2012?)

[Andy Field] "FX Factory 3.0.2 also seems to crash 10.0.4"

OK for me. But the more I play with filters in X, the more I hate it. Once you go past the internal plug-ins (which are very smooth) and some of the Motion template customs that aren't too taxing, it falls off a cliff. When I compare with Avid AVX, After Effects, Premiere CS5.5 or FCP 7, X is possibly the worst current API for third party filters at the moment in any NLE.

[Oliver Peters] "FWIW - FCP X 10.0.4 appears to have broken MB Looks and Sapphire Edge. Performance is awful. In both filters' own interfaces the FCP X reference frame appears upside down."

I received confirmation of these issues from both GenArts and RGS, so look for updates from them soon.

What great timing, I just finished a clean install of Lion and all my apps, plugins etc. then came to browse the COW afterward. I didn't even notice that it was 10.0.4 during installation and I don't have any unfinished projects in FCPX to worry about updating. Perfect!

I installed both FCPX and 7 (with my preferred method of X, Motion 5 & Compressor 4 first. Move them to a new folder in Applications, then install FCS 3 to the default location). I noticed that Motion 4 project file thumbnails are showing up in Finder and that quick look works as well. Motion 5 project files still show "Media Missing" as before. Was this always the case? I didn't think either Motion 4 or 5 projects files were showing thumbnails or quick look before (when both versions are installed, of course). If this is something that was "fixed" in the Motion 5 update, I would have thought that it would fix Motion 5 projects not Motion 4...

BTW - in case it hasn't been obvious, each of these updates is NOT backwards compatible with previous versions of the app. So once projects are updates, I don't believe you can open them in a previous version (although I haven't tested).

One colleague of mine is also reporting crashed with the NVIDIA Quadro 4000 card due to conflicts.
