Performance Issues

Sure, FCP X is a long way from complete for pro users. In fact, it's unusable for broadcast users. There. I said it. Not going to defend it, and not going to complain I'm not disappointed. I still have some faith in Apple getting it right eventually, but it may come too late.

However- I could forgive FCPX if it gives me that amazing performance everyone promised. I've just hooked it up to my MBP (Core2Duo 2.66 with 4Gb RAM) and the performance blows - basic video is fine, but any effect at all and it's dropping frames like a bitch. Background rendering is very slow - and my laptop was running like crazy.

As a tech demo (and that's all FCPX is at the moment) it's not impressing me so far (I'll stick it on a quad core iMac tomorrow). Anyone had a good experience? I'd stick it on one of my Mac Pros but 1) I use them to make money and 2) the GPUs in them are not supported by X.

Hmmm.

Ben could it be you only have 4GB of RAM?

This app seems like it needs minimum of 16GB to do anything impressive and rightfully so.

I have 8Giga of Ram and FCPX is very slow on my MacPro 8 Core. The rendering and the importing in background slow the software a lot.

I'm sure it's a factor Chris - that's why I wanted to see what performance others were seeing on different systems. I was under the impression that this software would even run well on an Macbook Air (I recall this comment being made by one of the 'gurus' posting advance info.

I'd expect it to run at least as well as FCP7 on all my systems. It seems on many, including a unibody MBP, which does not support 16Gb RAM, I may be sh*t out of luck. I thought this kind of powerful laptop editing would be a primary first use of FCPX, before the big systems get compatible.

It appears I am wrong.

I think you'll need an OpenCL graphic card to see it running full steam.

Ben do you have an openCL compliant video card in your mac book?

I was under the impress it wouldn't even install unless you had one...

Well, it let me install it (and I purchased it from the laptop). It's not on the Apple list, so I guess it's ok.

I'm taking delivery of some quad core iMacs tomorrow with 2Gb gfx cards and 16Gb of RAM. I'm guessing they'll be fast.

However, I was expecting more from a lower spec system - even rendering of 'basic' inbuilt effects seemed slow. No good for any of my mobile jobs - and I thought that might be a first use.

I have a gut feeling it will run a lot better under Lion
