How should we produce for the New iPad

So the new iPad just dropped and it is boasting an impressive 2047 X 1536 screen. I might be a video editor by my math is good enough to see that this more pixels than 1080P HD (Not much but a bit). So are we going to try to match it or does it simply not matter?

My instincts tell me that it doesn't matter. At that small of a screen at normal viewing distances 1080P will look amazing (just like 720P does).

This might not be the right forum but I thought I'd throw it to the wolves.

NO camera shoots those dimensions, so editing will still be in the 1920x1080 and 1280x720 realm.

Just because the space is there to be filled, doesn't mean you need to fill it.

True, but 1920 x1080 videos should look very good on the new iPad. Now if we can just use it as a field monitor with our F3!

2K frame sizes are 2048 x 1152 for 16:9. So the new screen is not quite 16:9 but this is close if you don't want the display to be doing the resize.

Not quite 16:9? Not even close. It's 4:3.

Do what you've been doing for every other computer diplay capable of resolutions higher than 1080p.

Now wouldn't it be Apple's way to create a preset project timeline call "iPad" in FCPX 10.0.4 update.

Given the compressed media that is going to be seen on the iPad I wouldn't worry too much about the upped resolution that it has. It will be great for crisper text, thus hopefully less eye strain for prolonged reading, but for video and games there are other hardware limiting factors (storage, processing power, etc.) that will keep the screen from being as looking as brilliant as it could.

Even though the screen is higher rez, video playback still maxes out at 1920x1080 @ 30p on the new iPad.

Well iPad 3 supports High Profile 4.1 which is quite good. In theory you could run 2048x1024 at 24/25 fps at high bitrates (50Mbit/s) as well as 1920x1080 at 24, 25 and 30 p.

From the new iPad's tech specs (emphasis mine):

Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 1080p, 30 frames per second, High Profile level 4.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; MPEG-4 video up to 2.5 Mbps, 640 by 480 pixels, 30 frames per second, Simple Profile with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps per channel, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format

...which happen to be the exact same video playback specs as the iPad 2.

Best,
Andy

Earlier i-devices have had quite flexible use of resolutions - it's not fixed to a set res but amount of pixles.

- 1920x1080 = 2,07 Mpix / frame and 62,2 Mpix / sec at 30 fps
- 2048x1024 = 2,09 Mpix / frame and 52,4 Mpix / sec at 25 fps.

I can't guarantee it'd work but I think it should.

Isnt the LightIron outpost cart system already have been using the iPad as field monitors for dailies? And it was their dream to have a 2k monitor on a future ipad..dream come true. http://www.lightiron.com/services/outpost
