Be very careful if you are considering the 7tox translator.

Very exited that I was i bought it thinking $10 can't be better spent
BUT
media has to be online in order for it to work.....

This of course makes it basically unusable but for the last project you worked on (if that)

Hope I can safe a few people some money!

Works fine here. Any current projects are online. Any completed projects are archived to cheap backup hard drives (2 copies) and would have to be reloaded to my raids in any case if I needed to work on them.

Best,
John

I'm unclear what your needs are.

[Carsten Orlt] "This of course makes it basically unusable but for the last project you worked on (if that)"

Why isn't it good for the current project you are working on...in FCP 7?

And why would you convert a project from 7 to X if there is no media?

Because I have projects from the last 10 years which contain footage I still want to use.
Even if the media is backed up it would take me a long time to restore (tens of hours of footage on LTO per project, and there are many).
I spent weeks and weeks describing all the shots and it would be nice if I could translate that to X, but I think the only real workable solution is CatDV.

I understand that 7toX will work for many people, but I wanted to make users aware of this specific limitation.

Of course it was my mistake to not read the fine print :-)

Carsten

Yeah...I think that for what you want to do, this isn't the app to use...

Since the media must be online, you still need to have a working copy of FCP7 around as long as you want to get to your old projects....that could really stink in a few years.

A second internal boot drive with legacy FCS3 and Snow Leopard @32 bit is the best way to achieve that, I am sure Lion will break FCS3 eventually

Or, you could follow the directions in this cool tutorial to setup a multi-partition boot drive: http://library.creativecow.net/weiss_roth_david/FCP-10-MAC-Lion/1

Actually David I will have to do that if I want to experiment with FCPX as my MacPro is full with RAID'd internals, unless I use the optical drive bay.

You could also run a clone off of an external FireWire drive just for this purpose.

Even new macs which don't allow clean snow installs can still boot snow OS.

I was under the impression that new Macs, as in Mac purchased since Lion was released have firmware changes that won't allow you to install Snow Leopard. I recall reading some Mac Pro threads on this topic a while ago and that's what I thought the conclusion was.

You are exactly right. What I was saying is that they will still boot a Snow Leopard hard drive.

So, if you have an old MacPro and get a new MacPro, you can take your hard drive from the old one, place it in the new one, and the new MacPro will boot from the snow leopard drive if you choose. Same for new laptops/iMacs.

What you can't do is a clean install of snow leopard from the DVD on to a new lion era machine.

Sorry for any confusion.

Even though FCP7's XML format contains a lot of data, it certainly doesn't contain everything. So I imagine that 7toX needs to open up the source QTs and grab more data in order to do the conversion to FCPX.
