It's OT I know is anyone here running a Quadro 4000 card successfully on Lion? I enjoyed grading my last FCPX project on Resolve but I really needed the CUDA power to help.

and this might make things interesting
http://www.anandtech.com/show/5238/nvidia-releases-cuda-41-cuda-goes-llvm-a...

BTW not really off topic since this forum is moving towards more of a state of the industry direction as some of us hoped it would. FCPX is just the trigger for a much broader discussion. It certainly feeds into what might (or might not) replace the MacPro.

[Craig Seeman] "FCPX is just the trigger for a much broader discussion"

FCPX is more like the house that just burnt down, and as long as we're out here and warmed by the embers we might as well talk about other stuff, but every once in a while people go back to trying to figure out what caused the fire, and then tempers flare and fingers get pointed.

Sort of.

Bring those marshmallows and whisky over to my new house I'm building . . . with FCPX. There's no hot water yet but the furniture moves out of the way as you walk through. Never again will I bang my knees.

EXCELLENT.

LET US ALL NOW GO TO THIS TERRIFYING POLTERGEIST HOUSE WHERE WE TRY TO PICK UP OUR PRECIOUS INTUITIVE TOOTHPICKS WEARING STAPLED OVEN GLOVES WHILE THE CUPBOARD SKIDS PAST US.

MMMM. DELECTABLE.

I AM NOT BRINGING MY WHISKEY.

[Aindreas Gallagher] "I AM NOT BRINGING MY WHISKEY."

Hey but how else can we get good and soused and run around and actually have fun watching the furniture move. Just think, there's no chance of falling over it. But I wont be to blame when the chair moves as you try to sit down. I really like this moving furniture stuff. It's very easy to unpack when I ask for ale mugs and they appear out of three boxes into one place.

Oh no, you've destroyed all my illusions, I always took all your posts literally, sort of like the dead sea scrolls of frustration - it's like now there is no Santa.

You can still recover... just switch to method acting!

ha! well do you know - a little known fact - there are near to no Irish method actors, it's a different style of craft they pursue.

try Neeson, Byrne, Kavanagh, McAanally, McCann, Gleeson - they're on Olivier's side:

"why don't you try acting dear boy?"

As the man says: on the stage or the forum, the play is the thing.

Lion has the Quadro drivers already installed so it's not that bad. You do need to go to nvidia's site and download the CUDA drivers. They show up in System Preferences. Once you install, open the panel and check for updates. Once you have that, you should be good to go.

We just installed the cuda drivers and it seems to work fine. We did, however, install those drivers while logged in as the root. Lion's permissions have changed and the "admin" no longer is part of the root group (or wheel group, to be more specific). Here is an interesting post regarding the matter;

http://forums.nvidia.com/index.php?showtopic=215562

We did NOT do a clean install, but it seems to work fine.

I am. Running Lion 10.7.2. I'm also running it in slave mode, no monitor attached. I have a 5770 driving my displays. You can't really use a 5970, since it needs both power cords.

I've never had any issues with either FCP X, FCP 7 or PP CS5.5.1 running both cards. I also ran with just the Quadro for a while, but that was just prior to running FCP X.

Make sure you download the CUDA drivers from NVIDIA. Mac OS supports the Quadro, but it doesn't include the CUDA drivers.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/mac-driver-archive.html

Here's the Bearfeats benchmark showing Resolve benefits from running the Quadro in slave mode. Although they ran the test on version 7.x.

http://barefeats.com/wst10g11.html

It looks like B&H has the lowest price for them right now.

What's up with all the other responses here? Is everybody a comedian now? I come to this site for helpful and insightful conversation. Honestly.

Checked it again, since you pointed it out. I thought I made a mistake.

But B&H is currently cheapest.

$799 Newegg
$750 B&H

Make sure you purchase the Quadro For Mac. They do sell the non-Mac version. It's cheaper than the Mac version.

Unfortunately I live in the UK where things are considerably more expensive!
