Quick Heads Up: Hard Drive Availability may be problematic over the next quarter year

Sorry for the Off Topic, but folks who don't know might want to be aware that the flooding in Thailand has caused disruption in the hard drive parts supply chain. This will potentially cause media availability issues similar to, though perhaps not as drastic as, the tape shortage caused by Japan's recent earthquake/tsunami.

If you are planning a large project--and have new storage as part of that project--you might want to be aware. Further reading here:

Funny you should mention that. I was in a Micro Center store in St. Louis just yesterday, and noticed a "Limit 2 per customer" sign near the hard drives. That sure looked strange. Plus, there was a LOT of empty shelf space in the hard drive section. Coincidentally, I was at the store to pick up some Hitachi 2TB hard drives. I found some left, even at sale prices ($119 each).

I just got eight drives in. Hopefully that will tide me over.

Since the flooding in Thailand, affects primarily the maker of 80% of the market' drive motors, will this drive both computer manufacturers, and consumers towards a faster adaptation of SSD's?
Supposedly the tsunami was a catalyst for program delivery to migrate to a file based workflow when the Sony plant making HDcam SR tapes was put offline.

I know that was bandied about a lot, but everyone I know in the HDcam SR world is just waiting for tape to come back/ drop in price before beginning mastering and back-ups again. Nobody is trusting their masters to hard drive-only for the long run.

My guess is that the flood was orchestrated by Other World Computing in order to drive sales of their SSD's. Those guys are crafty.
