Offline media and no reconnect; how to overcome?
on Sep 29, 2011 at 4:49:28 pm

Given Apple's strict policy on assigning a unique ID for clips - which is probably based on one or all of creation date, modification date, file name, file size - we were wondering how you overcome the risk of accidentially changing the files outside FCPx.

Obviously targeted at a market where more and more people (like us) upgrade from iMovie to FCPx, the scenario of having a large "family" storage of clips/events that date from many different years and locations seems to become more and more common.

If one has clips not always assigned to only one project/timeline (and thus the need to use them more often), the risk of updating metadata/ file properties outside FCPx increases.

If MetaX or iTunes for example changes metadata, the clip in FCPx becomes offline. Let alone a rerendering that is saved over the original file.

We are in the process of consolidating our media files onto external hard disks and importing all (as linked media) into FCPx.

What are your ways to solve it? And what would you recommend (locking the files, waiting for an update with a reconnecting feature)?

Thank you for hints and comments!

How do you expect that these files might change? FCPX reacts differently depending on how it's changed and the process to reconnect (or not) changes too.
