Duplicating a timeline (project) for an upversion without duplicating media
on Aug 17, 2011 at 3:03:02 am

I just bought FCP X and i'm trying to adapt my FCP7 workflow. I simply want to upversion a cut. But when I try and duplicate my timeline it wants to copy the media and render files. If I tell it to just duplicate the timeline it wont allow me to rename my cut. e.g. v1 > v2.

Why does this seem so difficult?

Thanks for any help.

You can select to copy the project only (its the first item in the dialog). Deselect copy render files, if you don't want them duplicated.

You can rename your duplicate in the Inspector by clicking on Properties, then clicking the little wrench in the corner.

Ahhhh!!!! Thanks. It still seems silly to me that I can't just command+D the timeline.

Though a project in FCP X is similar to a sequence in FCP Classic, the way the two programs manage media and render files is different.

Yes, and the project cannot point to the existing renders. It either lets you make a copy of the project without renders or it will duplicate all the renders into the copy of the project's folder.

They gotta figure out a better way to do this.

Versioning should be a priority. If they can make auditioning work...

I'm calling it FCX. They took the "pro" out, so I will too.
I'll reconsider after the first upgrade.
