First official OSX Lion SUCKS thread
on Jul 20, 2011 at 12:48:47 am

Just wanted to start in on this before the bandwagon starts tomorrow. Lion is set to hit the shelves (or App Stores....) Tomorrow, and it is probably going to suck.

It may not suck as much as FCPX has to some of you, but nonetheless, it will probably suck some. For others, the general suckiness of this update may not be so sucky. We'll see.

Anyway, I think it would be wise to leave it alone. Let us all learn a lesson from FCPX experience, and wait a couple of updates before we dive in. There seems to be some fantastic new elements heading in Lion, and I'm really excited for them. But I also know that it will suck.

It's fun being an early adopter and all, but I for one am waiting for the initial kinks to work out before heading over to the new digs.

First!

I would not dream of putting it on a production machine.

But I will certainly try it out in the next few weeks as I have time. Just like I am trying FCPX on non production machines.

So far I really like FCPX, though it is not yet ready for prime time. I am experimenting with it. I think in a year or so it will b very good and I bet Lion will be great as well.

So far every Apple major change (with a very few exceptions) has been great, but it usually takes a while to be ready for serious work. Like all other SW/HDW I have used in the last 4 decades.

Why be so negative?

Most of us probably have a bunch of old SATA drives hanging around and on a Mac Pro at least it's easy to swap out the drive, so I might install it on a separate drive and check it out like that. But yeah there's no way I'll put it on my main system right now.

May I suggest that you take a peek at my tutorial on just this very subject. The main difference being that I show you how to setup multiple bootable partitions on a single drive so that you can simply boot between the operating systems and versions of FCP like there's no tomorrow.

I may check that out. I do know how to make new partitions but maybe not how to add a new partition to an existing one. In any case I have it set up with bootcamp on my system drive and think I won't mess with that. But I really don't see much point in playing with Lion right now anyway.

Thank you Matt, but what happened to the PR job I hired you to do? Did somebody else promise you more and better tacos?

I've been using Lion for months on our laptops. Ironically, when I have to go to Snow Leopard, I find myself mildly annoyed. I was never a big fan of spaces, but I really like the whole dashboard/launchpad/expose thing now. I'll be interested to see how it works though with a dual 27 cinema display setup - especially fullscreen apps.
It's a pleasant evolutionary step from SL rather than the Revoltalution of FCPX. I don't advise anyone update anything until they've confirmed their favorite applications are compatible with it. Really.

Upgrading a production machine with 1.0 os, software or whatever is never a smart thing.
Thats nothing new with Lion.

I wonder where we stand with clonable drives with Lion?? I for one relly like the way we can back up complete OS drives with CCC.

the CCC site says the latest update is ready for Lion. I switched to SuperDuper a couple of years back. One word of caution; after cloning, it's worth verifying the sizes of the original and clone drive. I cloned a media drive last year, and found that the clone size was quite a bit smaller. I compared folder sizes until I found out that one very large source video file did not copy over (it can't even copy over when dragging via Finder, to be fair), but I wish that SuperDuper had alerted me to the fact that a file couldn't copy instead of just saying that the process was complete with no indication.

Didn't upgrade to Snow Leopard until over a year after it was released, probably will do the same with Lion.

I will be waiting until 10.7.2 or thereabouts before I switch. Can't even play with it as my only Mac is a workstation.

Sure you can. Playing is no problem. Check out my tutorial below and see how to play to your heart's content. Multiple bootable partitions will allow you to achieve a setup as in the diagram below, making any OS and any version of FCP ready for play or work whenever you desire.

Hmm..

I'll say it sucks if I move my browser and every other window starts following it...

I'll say it sucks if I can only have one browser window open at a time...

I'll say it sucks if I can't access my email or send one anymore or can't communicate with the outside world...

I'll say it sucks if I can't change the size of my application windows....

I'll say it sucks if once I download something I can't move it...

you know, basic stuff we obviously all took for granted in something else...

I reverted back to snow leopard.

Ive a 15" mbp 2011 and gave nothing but trouble.

My NAS was not working anymore (only after some 'hack')
Timemachine doesnt support my NAS anymore
Cant remote desktop (vnc) from windows to lion.
Playing video in chrome decided to stop working and the webcam decided to hang also several times.

This on a 3 weeks old mbp

I must agree with Mark Blabla as I have it on a MBP 15" as well, I work in the web design and development field in a room full of windows fans so I must be able to seamlessly work with windows machines. That was a very simple task with Snow Leopard only require the minimum of effect. Now with Lion it has been a real challenge to even get OS X to talk to the window boxes let alone play nicely. Unless I can figure something out I will be forced to retro grade (upgrade) to snow leopard to simple get the stuff done I need to do.

For a Upgrade Lion sure feels like a down grade to me!!! Of course this is simple only my thoughts based on my experiences im sure if all you work with is apples or the few windows setups that lion will play nice with then you will be fine. We also have a Terastation here and I had to fight for almost a entire day to find a solution to even get Lion to connect to it and then it doesnt do it well.
