Final Cut Update
on Nov 15, 2018 at 6:13:27 pm

So, it looks like there will not be version 10.5 anytime soon but there is a very nice update that just came out today.

http://www.fcp.co/final-cut-pro/news/2129-apple-update-final-cut-pro-x-to-1...

Motion is going to have additional color grading tools. No built in mask tracking or better mask tools for color grading this round. However, there are very nice features in this update!

Given some of these are very nice improvements rather than a bug fix with a few tweaks, I'm going to have to imagine that 10.5 is going to be really big. My guess is they'll get a preview (with NDA 😒) at the Creative Summit for a very big upgrade in the first half of next year. At least my fractured crystal ball tells me that.

Cant see the update here in the UK yet, not exactly an earth shattering update but it's something.

As Craig said 10.5 next year - at the same time as the new Mac Pro?

I do appreciate the Batch Share function or is this not new?

This implementation is new.
Added into the interface directly.

Denver Riddle warns don't update because they haven't tested Color Finale on 10.4.4.
BorisFX continues to warn that Continuum is not compatible with Mojave.
If this keeps up I'll only be able to run FCP5 legacy on my PPC PowerMac Tower.

Not all, but a nice batch. (Pun intended.)

The big news appears to be the fashion in which they have allowed developer hooks directly into X.

Watching the Frame.IO integration video appears to show a truly integrated approach that is way more than a third party window, and more an extension of the software itself to residence inside inside the app itself.

It will be interesting to see if it works as smoothly as the intro video implies.

Since some of you were ragging on Resolve for playing "catch up", let me point out that Workflow Extensions and Batch Share are merely features that "catch up" to similar features in Premiere Pro ☺

Wow. Actual visual timecode of all clips playing on the timeline.

I missed this feature so much.

It seems that FCPX caches all the Projects when you open the Library now, so it gets that long annoying process out of the way first, which is nice.

OK, time to test frame.io!!!!

So like every other NLE waveform re-drawing doesn't slow the timeline down now?

Not quite sure yet, but there's also been updates to MXF file reading which is great. I know you work with XAVC a lot (so do I) and it's much better.

Well 10.44 just landed here (delays due to turbulence over the English Channel) and it'd definitely quicker with a 4K XAVC project that I currently have running. Fingers crossed, it would be a major bonus for me.

Final Cut Pro X introduces third-party workflow extensions

Since someone mentioned timecode...

And....

Frame.io Introduces Powerful Workflow Extension for Final Cut Pro X

[Jeremy Garchow] "OK, time to test frame.io!!!!"

So this is awesome. I hope we can dock the window in the Event Browser one day, but for now, this is a killer feature that I miss from the Adobe panels in Ae/Pr when working in FCPX.

General FCPX performance seems to be on point as well!

I don't know what the rumored 10.5 was supposed to be, but there are some real workflow enhancements in this update, (Comparison Viewer, Timecode, better selection tools, and finally, finally a batch share!!!!)

All this and I haven't even explored the new Comic filter, yet.

So does this mean that we can all agree, as adults, that Apple has given sufficient warning about a planned EOL?

[Jeremy Garchow] "So does this mean that we can all agree, as adults"

It doesn't matter what the end of that sentence is, and I think you know the answer. 😂 In any case, a vendor providing detailed worfklow information for people who want it is always a good thing, and it's nice to see Apple raising their game in this regard.

It's funny, for the Extensions in particular, I'm kind of thinking of this release as a Throwback Thursday celebration of the days when Apple robustly and creatively partnering with third parties wasn't news!

I don't mean this as faint praise, or snark for its own sake. It's snark in the service of HIGH praise. LOL

I'm happy to see .srt files working in the captioning now... that saves me some cross-conversions.

I'm hopeful this "extensions" approach will lead to a flurry of third-party providers adding in interesting and powerful new "toys" in the toolbox. I think it bodes well for making FCPX viable long into the future.

It still bugs me that I can interactively drag around on a piece of video in FCP7's windows to move and distort, it but I only have the sliders to do that in FCPX... or did I miss something in the manuals?

Right click in the viewer to get crop, distort, and position tools.

There also keyboard shortcuts listed next to the tools in that same drop down.

Something new in 10.4.4 :

Just installed the update and all was going well UNTIL I was suddenly no longer able to play clips in the browser! None of the keyboard commands to play work in th browser, while the project timeline functions normally. Any one else seeing this?
My hardware is a 2013 iMac running Mojave and ten dot four dot four.

Look at the columns you have showing in the browser (you may need to scroll right to see them all). Are the columns for Video/Audio roles showing? If so, when you hit play, does it expand the roles column or twirl down your clip when you hit play instead of playing the footage? If so, hide those columns. You may need select another event then go back to the original vent to get it working again.

So nearly everytime I post on the Cow about my computer misbehaving, it corrects its bad behavior.

1) I closed X and re opened my library> no change

2) I closed X and re started my computer , opened the library > no change

3) I posted on The Cow

4) re opened library checked to amke sure i was in the right workspace & Voila its all working again. GO figure.
