Exciting times ☺

Now all we need is a new Mac Pro with Thunderbolt 10 ;)

I'll just add that on virtually ALL the FCP X insider chat streams, the word appears to be "Migrate SLOWLY" and take care. Apparently Mojave includes some pretty deep changes - and this update, more than most, won't be a just "go ahead and click and update" transition.

Just a FYI.

I did just that and so far........... It's very good, not a single plugin is broken!

The only thing about this eGPU implementation is that it is a toggle - either/or. It doesn't do anything to combine the power of both the internal and the external GPUs.

Hopefully next version of FCPX is optimized for eGPU so that it uses BOTH internal and external gpus.

Currently, it's not particularly help because it requires the newish Thunderbolt 3 and I would imagine most newish computer used by pro editors have pretty good gpus. But: if you could harness dual gpus, then you'd really have something.

The reviews I’ve seen seem to hint that performance is split between the two by using the external for playback and internal for encoding tasks. Hopefully there will be a way of combining both but I haven’t seen evidence that works on any OS.

I think DaVinci Resolve can use both the internal and external GPU. Not sure that’s always (or ever) the best practice for performance.

I can do some tests! :)

That's the default unless you set the preference to the external.

Interesting. So an iMac pro with a huge gpu in an external enclosure could be an absolute beast of a machine

Steps to take to update with safety:

Check with vendors for any plug-ins I have in FCP X.

Clone my current system (which includes the current FCP X App)

Keep camera card copies of all my projects along with their current edited state in FCP X (all of which are on external drives)

Do a clean install of the latest OS.

All this said, You posted this 9-26-18.

What's the word now.
I've read positive report on updating on other FCP X Forums but negative reports here.

Anyone have experience with the Sonnet eGFX box and the AMD Vega 64 Frontier 16gb card? Thinking seriously about it for my full top spec 2017 iMac which crashes frequently due to "GPU Issues" (at least according to Digital Rebellions crash log thingie).

Current card is Radeon Pro 580 8GB.

Thoughts? Thanks.

[Michael Hadley] "my full top spec 2017 iMac which crashes frequently due to "GPU Issues" (at least according to Digital Rebellions crash log thingie)."

I've also had many GPU-related crashes on a 2017 i7 iMac when adding several color corrections in FCPX when the scopes are up. That was 10.4.1 and 10.4.2 on High Sierra 10.13.4, material was 8-bit 4:2:0 4k H264 100 mbps from Sony Alpha, Panasonic GH5 and DVX200 cameras. However I was always in proxy mode so it was really editing ProRes.

It should never do that. I've since switched my heavy work to my iMac Pro which doesn't crash under the same conditions so I haven't had time to re-evaluate the iMac after upgrading to Mojave, FCXP 10.4.4 and Pro Video Formats 2.0.7.

Maybe the eGPU would help but FCPX shouldn't be crashing in the first place. Below is a representative call stack from one of my FCPX crashes.

Thanks for the info.

Perhaps it's the scopes and the AMD 580 card--as you don't have the problem with your iMac Pro. I wonder if the eGPU with/AMD Vega 64 will solve the issue.

But we both agree: this shouldn't be an issue. Really not doing anything to taxing with FCPX and iMac so it shouldn't be crashing.
